Dali I have observed an interesting difference between the US and Japan. I noticed it when I first came to Japan. I was dumbfounded.

Dali In Japan, while walking down the street, if you see a beauty salon, you might find that the front door and other parts of the building are glass, through which you can clearly look inside. And you can see the customer receiving service!
ダリちゃん 日本ではね、通りを歩いて美容院を見ると、ビルの表玄関や他の箇所がガラスで、中が丸見えじゃない。で、お客さんが施術を受けているのが見える。
Me Is this unusual in the US?
私 これってアメリカでは普通じゃないの？
Dali Yes! It’s unbelievable. This is such a private activity. In the US, customers are hidden from the street because they are receiving a private beauty treatment. Of course, inside the beauty salon, a customer might see the other customers receiving treatment. But strangers walking along the street cannot see inside. Maybe on the street, many shops have open windows, but beauty salons have no open windows. The doors are usually closed, through which the inside cannot be seen. This is a private space, like a toilet. In the midst of receiving beauty treatment, there are periods when the woman’s appearance is very unappealing. Why would she want passersby to see her in this condition?
ダリちゃん 普通じゃないよ！ 信じられない。ほんとプライベートなことなんだから。アメリカではね、お客さんは通りから見えないんだ。だってプライベートな美容施術を受けているんだから。もちろん美容院の内部では、お客さんは他のお客さんが施術を受けているのは見えるかもしれないけど。でも通りを歩いている全くの他人が中を見ることはできない。通りでは多くの店には開け放たれた窓があるかもしれないが美容院にはそんな窓はない。ドアは通常閉まっていて中をうかがい知ることはできない。これはプライベートなスペースなんだ。トイレと一緒だよ。美容施術の真っただ中では、とても人に見せたくない段階がある。こんな状況を通行人に見られたくないだろう？

Dali But now I am used to it. Now, I understand that Japanese women don’t care about beauty privacy. In contrast, American women don’t want the public to see them receiving a beauty salon service.
ダリちゃん でも今では慣れちゃった。日本女性は美容のプライバシーを気にしないということが分かった。それに対して、アメリカ女性は自分が美容院で施術を受けているところを赤の他人に見られたくないんだよ。

Japanese men care about beauty privacy more than Japanese women.
僕の近所でも大きなガラス窓のある美容院をよく見かける。ご婦人方が美容の施術を受けているのが丸見え。対照的に、僕が行くような高級理髪店に目を向けると、玄関がガラス張りのお店は、僕の近所ではほとんど見かけない。日本男子は日本女性よりも美容のプライバシーについてより気にするからなんだと思う。
