Dali Today, I would like to talk about my friend, David. David is a forty-year-old Canadian. He teaches English to kids at Child Academia at Akasaka. He came to Japan 15 years ago. He is single and has a girlfriend of ten years. She is called the devil woman.

Dali No, she is Japanese. But actually she has Chinese ancestry. But first, let’s get back to the story of David. Up until recently, he was happy to live alone. But one day in winter three years ago, the water heater in his rented apartment broke, and he contacted the landlord. He needed to have the water heater replaced or fixed. The landlord said, “No, we will not fix it. This building is so old that we need you to leave. We will return all of the security deposit. We are not repairing anything, and we want to eventually empty this building.” So he had to move to a different place. Before he moved, he told me not to tell the devil woman that he would move. Although she was his girlfriend of 10 years, he didn’t want to live together with her. So I promised not to tell her.
ダリちゃん いや。日本人。でも実際、先祖は中国なんだけど。でも先ずデビッドの話に戻ろうよ。最近まで彼は一人暮らしで幸せだった。でも3年前の冬のある日、彼の賃貸アパートの給湯器が壊れたので大家に連絡を取った。給湯器を取り換えるか直すかする必要があった。大家は「いいえ、給湯器は直しません。このビルはとても古いので立ち退きを要求します。保証金は全額お返しします。どんな修理もする気はありません。最終的にはビルを空にしたいと思っています」と言った。そういう訳で、彼は他に引っ越さなければならなくなった。引っ越す前、彼はわしに引っ越すことはデビルウーマンに言わないようにと言われた。彼女は彼の10年来のガールフレンドだったが、デビッドは彼女と一緒に暮らしたくなかった。で、わしは言わないことを約束した。

Dali But for some reason she found out that he had to move. She pressured him to come to live with her, but he had already moved to the other apartment, about which he didn’t tell her. So he moved to her house very reluctantly. But the devil woman charged a very high rent, something like 10 man’en per month. Additionally, he also had to secretly pay 6 man’en for the other apartment.
ダリちゃん でもなぜか彼女は彼が引越しをしなければいけなかったことを突き止めたんだ。彼女は彼に一緒に住みに来るよう迫ったが、彼は既によそのアパートに引っ越していた。でもそのことは彼女に告げなかった。で、彼はとても渋々彼女の家に引っ越した。でもデビルウーマンはひと月10万円ほどの高額な家賃を請求したんだ。その上彼は、他のアパート代6万円も内緒で払わなければならなかった。

Dali I’ve heard that the devil woman has become extremely strict. He can’t go out to drink. She says, “Don’t go out with Dali-chan. He doesn’t wear a mask. He is not very hygienic! Don’t bring the virus into our house!” When he comes home drunk, she smells the alcohol, and gets so angry. She is always threatening, saying, “If you break my rules, I will kick you out of this house. I will throw your things out to the street and lock the door!”
ダリちゃん 聞くところによると、デビルウーマンはとても情け容赦無く厳しくなったそうだ。デビッドは外に飲みにも行けない。彼女は「ダリちゃんと出かけちゃダメ。彼はマスクもしないし、あまり衛生的じゃないでしょ！ 家にコロナウィルスを持ち込まないで！」と言う。デビッドが飲んで帰ると、彼女はお酒の匂いを嗅ぎ分けて無茶苦茶怒る。彼女はいつも脅しながら「私のルールを破ったりしたらこの家から蹴り出すからね。デビッドの私物を道に放り投げてドアの鍵を閉めてやる！」と言う。

私 オー怖い怖い！
Dali I ask him, “Why do you live with her? She gives you nothing! Nothing at all!” Because I thought David might have an ulterior motive, I asked him, “How is your love life?” But he said, “No good. She refuses to have any intimate relations!”―Why?
ダリちゃん わしは彼に「なぜ彼女と一緒に住むの？ 彼女と居ても何の得もない！ 全く何も!!」と言った。わしはデビッドには秘めた動機があるのかもしれないと思ったので「夜の生活の方はどうなの？」と彼に聞いてみた。でも彼は「ダメだね。エッチもさせてくれない！」と言った―なぜなんだ？

Dali The story continues. Last time I saw David, there were red lines down his face. I asked him, “What happened?” He said, “Last night, the devil woman got angry and scratched me on the face with her sharpened claws!” I also discovered that she often hits him with her fists and clothes hangers! If he tries to protect himself with his arms and hands, she gets even more furious!
ダリちゃん 話は続くんだ。この前デビッドに会った時、彼の顔から下にかけて赤いスジが何本かついてたんだよね。わしは彼に「どうしたの？」て聞いた。彼は「昨夜、デビルウーマンが怒って鋭い爪で僕の顔を引搔いたんだ！」と言った。わしは彼女がよく握りこぶしや衣類ハンガーでデビッドを叩いていることも知った。デビッドが手と腕で身を守ろうとすると、彼女はますます怒り出すんだって！

私 かわいそう！
Dali I asked him, “What’s the point of living with her? She’s old and she’s not beautiful. You don’t have any kind of sexual relationship. She hits you. She is violent. You have no freedom to go out. You pay 10 man’en for rent. What’s the merit? Just move out!” Finally, he confessed, “I lived alone for more than 10 years since I came to Japan. At first, I didn’t want to live with her, but now after having lived with her for this one or two years, I am afraid to live alone again.”
ダリちゃん わしは彼に「彼女と暮らして何の意味があるの？ 若くないし美人でもないし。体の関係もないんでしょう。殴るし、暴力的だし。自由に出歩くこともできない。10万円の家賃を払って。何のメリットがあるの？ 家を出ちゃいなよ！」と言った。彼は「僕は、日本に来てから10年以上一人で暮らしてきた。初めは彼女と一緒に住みたくはなかったけれど、彼女と一緒に住んで1－2年経った今は、再び一人暮らしをすることが僕は怖いんだ」と、とうとう告白したんだ。
