Learn from the wisdom of Japan’s feudal age – a 230 year-old weir can still teach us a lot
Eight Afghan officers engaged in irrigation sector, visited Asakura city (Fukuoka prefecture, Japan) where Yamada weir exists, in September 2019. Yamada weir is a 230 years-old (originally constructed in 1663 and renovated in 1790) barrier structure which has boulders laid over the riverbed of the Chikugo River in order to alter water flow characteristics.
Peshawar-kai & Peace Japan Medical Services (PMS) headed by Dr. Tetsu Nakamura adapted this Japan’s technology and many more anti-flood control measures into Kunar River in Afghanistan in 2010. It is called “PMS Method” in order to control strong water flow of the River and to intake water into irrigation canals.
