She looked up at huge cedar trees which rose behind the building and went up the
three steps of stone stairs. Then she touched the lattice door lightly. It's double
doors opening outward and wasn't locked. She looked in the side through the lattice
to find it difficult to see well in the darkness. However, she made sure that nobody
was there.
She dared to open the left door. Dust lay thin on the wooden floor. She dusted off
her socks by hand and stole into the one-roomed house. At that time, she looked
backward over her shoulder for an instant.
She felt the room warm, for she was able to shelter from a cold wind.

The house stood in solitude in the vacant land which had almost the same area as
a tennis court. Since she didn't sense the presence of life, she went to the front.
It was about 15 feet square. The gabled roof and timbered walls were still new. The
two ornaments of dogs modeled in stone, such as gateposts, were put on the both
sides of the front entrance. They looked new,too.（This is my first time seeing such a building. But it's nostalgic.）She thought.

She felt not only cold, but thirsty and hungry.（What did I eat today?）She didn't
remember even it. With indistinct brightness, she couldn't guess what time it is,
either.（What is this dimness due to? The sun is going down? Or the sky is covered
with dark clouds?）She wanted to break the present situation somehow, but couldn't
think of any ideas.
When she looked at the left side incidentally, something like a darkish golden roof
appeared through the branches of trees. She hid behind a tree immediately. Then she
stooped down a little and walked with stealthy steps.
Before twenty steps' walk, she broke out of the woods into the open. There were a
house she had never seen in her life.

（There must have been a caution that he feared to be involved in a trouble. He must
have felt me to be strange or weird. So he gave me his clothes to send me away quickly,maybe.） The true intention was good riddance rather than kindness. But she 　was glad he had decided not to report to the police. An ordinary man would have 　　reported it.Or probably he should have done it. she walked, dwelling on it to 　　 forget the cold even at one time.
Unfortunately, there were no houses around there. A dirt road went somewhere among
the trees of high cedar. She didn't meet anybody. The road looked like a disused
one.

The girl wore the suit over the bath towel.It calmed her down a little bit. But it
was still as cold as ever. She wanted to think in a place where the wind was not blowing. Though she looked around, there was nothing used as a windbreak, such as newspapers or cardboard boxes.
Unwillingly she began to walk aimlessly. She thought she would ask that old man to
permit her entrance into his house several times, but gave it up after all. His face
smiled but his eyes didn't smile.
