US forces have staged a targeted airstrike on Sunni militants in northern Iraq.

Rear Admiral John Kirby is the Pentagon's Press Secretary.

He said 2 FA-18 aircraft dropped laser-guided bombs on mobile artillery near Erbil on Friday afternoon.

The weaponry was being used to attack Kurdish forces defending their main stronghold.

US forces maintain that it will continue to launch targeted airstrikes against Sunni extremists if the safety of US citizens and US-related facilities are threatened.

The United States has diplomats and other officials in Erbil.

US President Barack Obama announced on Thursday that he authorized the use of targeted airstrikes against Islamic militants on humanitarian grounds to protect US citizens and minority groups in Iraq.

Security has worsened in Iraq after Iraqi extremists groups gained control of Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city in June.

This marks the first US air raid on Iraq since US combat troops withdrew from the country in December 2011.
