Tim 先生の One-point Lesson #1

2010-03-18 19:50:17 | Weblog
Hi, everybody. Starting this week, I'll be blogging a short one-point English lesson on this site. Sometimes it'll be about new words, sometimes it could be grammar points.

Today I thought I'd start with a few idioms. Also called 'set expressions', idioms are often confusing because their meanings aren't obvious from the words they use. A person has to learn these phrases like new vocabulary, but they are very helpful for understanding English, and they can also be great fun!

We will start with a few examples that use parts of the body, which is a common form of idiom. Some very common expressions include "to have cold feet", which means becoming afraid of something important you were planning to do, such as getting married. "To bite your tongue" means to keep quiet even when you really want to say something. Lastly, "to keep your chin up" means to stay cheerful, even when you have a lot of problems.

I'll be talking about a different part of the English language every Thursday, so see you next week!
