Cultural Performance by artists from Bangladesh
Pohela Boishakh, holds a significant place in the hearts of the people of Bangladesh. Pohela Boishakh, occurring on
14th April, is the first day of the Bengali calendar and it is celebrated all over Bangladesh. Pohela Boishakh connects
the people of Bangladesh irrespective of religion, ethnicity and regional differences. It is the occasion to welcome the
New-Year with a new hope of peace, prosperity and good will.
1 . Song from Sylhet, (a hilly region of Bangladesh) by Ms. Baby Rani Karmakar
2. Dance: Manipuri- Manipuri community is one of the ethnic communities settled in the Sylhet region of Bangladesh.
The group will dance to a rhythmic music dressed in their colourful costumes.
3. Dance: Dhol- This performance, based on a folk song, speaks of the importance of the dhol and the joy its rhythm
brings to our lives.
4. Dance: Esho he Boishakh- Meaning "Come 0 Boishakh", A song written and composed by Nobel Laureate
Rabindranath Tagore, welcoming the new year with abundant joy. The song includes hope of removing all the
unpleasant memories, darkness and bad events of the past year with the arrival of the New Year.
5. Dance : Monsoon or rainy season is welcomed with relief after the scorching heat of the summer in Bangladesh.
A dance performance on medley of three songs of Monsoon written by Rabindranath Tagore.
6. Dance : Nao Chariya De- The rivers play a major role in the lives of the rural people, bringing fertile soil to land
for irrigation and also a means of transport. The boatmen of these rivers sing the famous folk song known as "Bhatiali"
while rowing their boats.
7. Dance : Babu Selam- Snake charming is a popular rural element of Bangladesh. The snake charmers, who earn
their living from playing and charming snakes, lead a nomadic life along the banks of the rivers of Bangladesh. This
song, a very popular one, written by our rural poet Jasimuddin speaks of a snake charmer couple who live happily their
nomadic lives by playing with snakes and moving from one river bank to another.
8. Dance : Harvest- This is another song written by Rabindranath Tagore, on the season of Autumn, when the crops
on the fields are ripe and ready to be harvested. This dance shows the joy of the rural people in harvesting their crops
showing a live husking machine during the dance on stage.
9 Dance : Spring- People sing joyful songs, dance in colourful costumes and adorn themselves with jeweiries made
of flowers to welcome the king of seasons Spring. This song is written by our national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam depicting
the colour and joy the season brings to our lives.
10. Dance: Ekti Bangladesh- After a series of struggle, fight and sacrifice we have achieved our freedom. Our country
Bangladesh is so beautiful, resplendent and bountiful. The last performance is a patriotic song depicting about the
beauty, struggle and courage of the land and its people. It says, "Bangladesh is a wonder to the world, the land is
nothing but my honour, my pride."
