GREATER Dandenong mayor Roz Blades wants to see Springvale become the next Chinatown in Melbourne.
To help that happen, she has initiated a promotional concept whereby Springvale's places of worship would be featured on postcards sent to tourism operators.
Cr Blades said while the idea was still in its infancy, she planned for four temples to be photographed and shown on two postcards.
The concept and some mock-up postcards will be launched at the first Springvale Full Moon Night Market on September 10.
Cr Blades said it was an exciting time for Springvale. "We've got the grade separation [funding], night market, new year festival, Asian food and groceries, and Asian temples," Cr Blades said. "It's adding something else on."
City of Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network tours co-ordinator Helen Heath said the postcards were a good idea, but she hoped they could one day include all the places of worship in the area.
The Interfaith Network runs monthly public tours of various places of worship in Greater Dandenong.
"There are some beautiful places around," Ms Heath said. "I think it's a great idea. I'd love to see it happen with other faiths and spiritual traditions, then everyone feels included. But it's a start."
Cr Blades said the free postcards would first be given to each of the temples, before being sent to tourism operators.
"This could be a bit ambitious, but there's no reason there has to be one Chinatown," she said. "We are going to be a very big, influential city. We can have another Chinatown in the south-east."
