SAY vs. TELL - Grammar - What's the difference?

What's the difference between "say" and "tell"? They both mean that you are expressing something using your words, but we use them in slightly different ways. The key point is that you say something, but you tell someone something.

What does that mean? That means that if you use the verb "say," you don't have to specify who you're saying it to. If you use the verb "tell," you do have to specify who you are telling. Here are a couple of examples:

 • I said, "I love chocolate." Or
 • I told her, "I love chocolate."
 • She said, "She would be here at five o'clock." Or
 • she told me, "She would be here at five o'clock."

Remember, there are exceptions, though. There are some phrases that use "tell" without specifying who you're telling. Here are just a few examples of those phrases:

 • He tells great stories.
 • He tells really bad jokes.
 • She always tells the truth.

I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. See you next time.

Idioms - RING A BELL? - English Vocabulary #shorts

What does it mean if something rings a bell? Today, we're looking at the advanced idiom "ring a bell." If you say that something rings a bell, it means it reminds you of something, but you can't exactly remember what it is. Here are a couple of examples:   • That song sounds really familiar. It rings a bell, but I don't remember the name of the artist. • Does the name John Smith ring any bells? It does, but I can't remember his face. • And there was this other company before that—you might have heard of it. I don't know. Name Nintendo. Does that ring a bell? Does this expression ring a bell for you? I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. See you next time. ❖ Support the channel HERE 👋🏽: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/organicenglish More from Organic English: Organic English Website: http://bit.ly/Organic-Web On Facebook: http://bit.ly/Organic-Facebook On Instagram: http://bit.ly/Organic-Insta SUBSCRIBE ➡️ http://bit.ly/Subscribe2OrganicEnglish #English #LearnEnglish #EnglishLanguage #IELTS #TOEFL #ESL #idioms #english #vocabulary #learnenglish #grammar #ielts #englishteacher #englishvocabulary #englishlearning #englishidioms #englishgrammar #englishtips #englishlanguage #phrasalverbs #toefl #education #studyenglish #learningenglish #learning #phrases #speakenglish #idiom #englishclass #esl #ingles #language #englishcourse #proverbs #vocab #learnenglishonline #englishlearning #idioms #english #esl #nativespeakeridioms #englishvocabulary #motivation

BY vs. UNTIL - What's the difference?

Today, I want to talk about the difference between "by" and "until" when we're talking about time. Here are some bullet-pointed examples for each meaning:

By:
 • I need to finish this report by 5 p.m. (This means the report must be finished at or before 5 p.m.)
 • She promised to be here by 8 o'clock. (This means the latest time she will arrive is 8 o'clock.)

Until:
 • I need to work on this report until 5 o'clock. (This means I am currently working on the report, or I will start working on it, but I will stop at 5 o'clock.)
 • She's going to be here until 8 o'clock. (This means she is currently here, but she will leave at 8 o'clock.)
I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. See you next time.

Idioms - JUMP THROUGH HOOPS - English Vocabulary #shorts

What does it mean if somebody makes you jump through hoops? Today we're looking at the idiomatic phrase "to jump through hoops." Now, if you have to jump through hoops, it means you have to do a lot of things that seem difficult or unnecessary to achieve something. Here are a couple of examples to illustrate: - The company expects applicants to jump through hoops during the hiring process, including multiple interviews, tests, and rigorous background checks. - As an international student, he had to jump through hoops to get his student visa. He had to submit a lot of documents, go through an interview process, and prove his financial ability. - You need to jump through some hoops to prove you're the right man for the job. Hoops, just a simple interview. So there you go. Have you had to jump through many hoops to get something done recently? I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. Idioms - KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL - English Vocabulary #shorts

What are you doing if you “keep your eye on the ball”? Today we'll look at the idiom “keep your eye on the ball”. In my last video, we looked at the idiom to “be on the ball”. Today's idiom, “keep your eye on the ball” has a different meaning, so be very careful. So if you keep your eye on the ball, you pay close attention to whatever it is you're doing. Okay, so you're staying focused or you're staying alert to the situation. Here are a couple of example sentences: • I kept my eye on the ball and prioritized my studies and was able to graduate in just three years. • I'm confident if we just keep people's eye on the ball, we'll be able to get this done. • She really needs to keep her eye on the ball if she wants to win the election. Now if you "take your eye off the ball", the opposite is happening. You're losing focus, you're not paying attention: • She lost the election because she really took her eye off the ball. So there you go, I want to help you keep your eye on the ball and keep improving your English, okay? https://organicenglish.club/resources ❖ Support the channel HERE 👋🏽: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/organicenglish More from Organic English: Organic English Website: http://bit.ly/Organic-Web On Facebook: http://bit.ly/Organic-Facebook On Instagram: http://bit.ly/Organic-Insta SUBSCRIBE ➡️ http://bit.ly/Subscribe2OrganicEnglish #English #LearnEnglish #EnglishLanguage #IELTS #TOEFL #ESL #idioms #english #vocabulary #learnenglish #grammar #ielts #englishteacher #englishvocabulary #englishlearning #englishidioms #englishgrammar #englishtips #englishlanguage #phrasalverbs #toefl #education #studyenglish #learningenglish #learning #phrases #speakenglish #idiom #englishclass #esl #ingles #language #englishcourse #proverbs #vocab #learnenglishonline
