Leahy is proposing the board consider allowing schools to ban the skirts, which are part of the school uniform.

"Girls feel more individual being able to wear the kilt. And it's a traditional thing. It's part of going to high school. If everyone had to wear pants all the time it would be annoying. Most of my friends like the kilt," Tidd said in a phone interview with the Star on Sunday.

The kilts are designed to be knee length. A lot of girls hem or roll them up, she said.

"Some girls in Grade 11, their kilts are really short. Leahy's motion calls on the board to invite all seven high schools in the district to comment on the proposal. "It should be a community decision," he said.

If approved, the decision whether to ban the skirts would be left to the individual school, he said.

Other Catholic boards, including those in Toronto, Halton, Peterborough and Clarington, have taken a similar step with the result that some schools in those districts have eliminated the kilt from the uniform, Leahy said.

The girls would wear slacks, he said. The uniform also comes with shorts for warmer weather, he said. The ruling would affect roughly 4,500 female students out of a total school population of 9,000, Leahy estimated.

School board chair Jim McCafferty said he hasn't heard any complaints about the kilts. The principals and vice-principals have the authority to enforce the rules on skirt length, he noted.

Also Monday, in Toronto, in an unrelated school matter, Earl Beatty Public School will host a community meeting to discuss its decision to ban the use of "hard" balls, such as footballs and soccer balls, due to the risk of injury.
