College Planning Kicks Off Library's Adult Programs

Navigating the college search and application process could be a daunting task for both high school students and their parents. There are so many schools to choose from, numerous applications to file by stringent deadlines and, of course, the anxiety produced by the exorbitant tuition costs.
Where does one begin? Masuk High School's Pupil Services department offers advise about online search engines. Counselors are also available for consultations and, in fact, meet regularly with the students from the start of their tenure at the Monroe high school.
To get high school parents headed in the right direction, the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library is also offering some assistance by sponsoring a two-day College Planning workshop. Specialist Tony Luther will share his expertise tonight at 6:30 p.m. and again on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.
Lorna Rhyins, Adult/Teen Services Librarian, said both adults and students are welcome. "He's been coming to Monroe for awhile and we always get a crowd," she said.
Among the many topics Luther will touch upon, Rhyins said he will discuss the difference between the SAT and ACT tests. He will also assist families in understanding the various avenues for applying for financial aid. Ideally, high school students who are in their junior year are the best candidates for the workshop.
"He'll tell you that by the time you get to your senior year, you should have everything already together," Rhyins said. "However, if you haven't quite got the ball rolling yet, it's not too late. Just come to the workshop and I'm sure it will be helpful."The Edith Wheeler Memorial Library is also sponsoring a program about Medicare, which is an issue that affects Monroe's older generation. Rhyins said that because legislation is constantly changing, it's vital that seniors stay on top of all of the current information available about enrollment.
Tropical Storm Irene caused this program to be rescheduled from its original date of Tuesday, Aug. 30, to Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m. "I have a huge group that signed up, but if there are any cancellations, please let me know," Rhyins said.She also pointed out that space is still available for those who would like to register.
