French Trader Says He Won’t Be Made a Scapegoat

ソシエテジェネラル銀行不正取引事件のトレーダーが、スケープゴートになるつもりはないといっているという記事（写真入り）。何十億ユーロもの架空取引を記帳した責任は認めています。

「In brief remarks in his lawyer’s office to a small group of photographers for Agence France-Presse, Mr. Kerviel said that while he took responsibility for booking billions of euros in fictitious trades, “I was singled out by Société Générale.”

“I am taking my share of responsibility, but I will not be the scapegoat,” Mr. Kerviel said.」

判事の事情聴取に対し、異常に多額な取引を上司が知っていたこと、銀行が昨年４月に警告を受け取っていたことをあらためて認めています。

「Mr. Kerviel was interviewed for eight hours Monday by Judge Renaud Van Ruymbeke, one of two judges overseeing the case.

In that discussion, Mr. Kerviel reaffirmed the account he gave last month to the police investigators, insisting that his bosses had been aware of his unusually large trades and that they had received warnings about his activities as long ago as last April.」

元トレーダーは銀行の発表どおり自分が主犯であることは認めていますが、４８億ユーロの損失全額の責任を負うつもりはないといっています。銀行が、株価の急落しているときに取引を清算したため、損害を悪化させたと主張しています。

「Mr. Kerviel has not disputed Société Générale’s claim that he was the architect of an elaborate ruse involving a series of fake trades that ultimately exposed the bank to $73.3 billion in risk — more than the company’s market value.

But he has refused to shoulder the blame for Société Générale’s entire 4.82 billion euros, or more than $7 billion, in trading losses, arguing that the bank worsened its losses by deciding to unwind all of his trades even as stock markets around the world were falling sharply.」

たしかに、不正の事実を公表したあとに取引を清算してもよかったようにも思われます。その方が透明性は高かったともいえます。どちらのやり方の方が最終的な損害が少なくてすんだかは、よくわかりませんが・・・。

会計的には、発覚の時点で巨額の簿外損失があったという事実は動かせません。発覚後の取引で損失が拡大したとしても、それが実際の取引に基づいて正確に記帳されていれば、問題はないということになります。こうした異常事態にどのように対処するかはリスク管理の問題であって、財務報告に限定した狭い意味の会計の問題ではありません。

やや細かい話になりますが、架空取引による簿外損失のうち、銀行の決算日である昨年１２月末現在で発生していたものは当然２００７年１２月期の決算に反映させる必要がありますが、その後の損失の拡大や、不正発覚後の手じまい取引での損失はどの期に計上するのでしょうか。損失を全部２００７年１２月期に取り込んでしまうと、２００８年における取引や時価の変動まで反映させる結果となり、それもおかしな感じがします。
