According to foreign media reports, the Bundeswehr may also use laser weapons in the future, at least for now is developing and testing the corresponding technology. As a first step, a high-powered laser cannon will be installed on a German navy K130 corvette next year. The laser guns will be supplied by the German subsidiaries of RHEI Metallurgy and Euromissile, arms companies that have so far competed with each other in laser weapons.
Peter Helmeyer, head of sales at Euromissile's German subsidiary, said the plan was to use the laser weapon "in short-range air defence or against speedboats". During the two-year laser weapon testing phase, researchers will test and gain experience with the technology. Laser weapons are seen as the future of military technology.
The Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and Active Service Support Office is promoting cooperation between euromissile and RHEI Metallurgy, two previously competing companies, in the field of laser weapons, Hellmeier said. The current cooperation is based on only one project and the possibility of a joint venture in the future is not ruled out.
