On the bridge over the river
One day streamed the green flag
Here again the youngman came
川にかかる橋の上にも、
ある日、緑の旗がひるがえっていた。
ここにも、あの若者が来たのだ。
On a fine day
The youngman came to a town
- our big town
And he displayed the green flag
On a top of large building
But only one green flag
ある晴れた日に、
若者は町にやってきた。ぼくらの大きな町へ。
そして、緑の旗を 大きなビルのてっぺんに立てた。
たった1本の旗だった。
Many ships are at anchor in the harbor
Only one of them held up
The green flag at the fore
Only one green flag
港にたくさんの船がとまっていた。
そのなかの1隻だけ、マストに緑の旗をひるがえしていた。
たった1本の緑の旗だ。
The man came to our school
He put up the green flag
In the school ground
We gazed up at the flag
With an absentminded idleness
若者はぼくたちの学校にもやってきた。
校庭に緑の旗をかかげていった。
ぼくたちは、ぽかんとして、
その旗をながめていた。
One day a lot of green flags
Were seen in the field
ある日のこと、たくさんの緑の旗が
野原にひるがえるのが見えた。
One day ever so many green flags
Streamd from the window in our town
ある日のこと、見たこともないほどたくさんの
緑の旗が、ぼくらの町の窓にひるがえっていた。
Numerous ships in the harbor
Flew the green flags up at the fore
港にいる数えきれない船が
マストに緑の旗をなびかせていた。
We hang out countless green flags
In our school
And we all had one in our hand
ぼくたちも、学校でたくさんの旗をたてた。
手に手に1本の緑の旗を持って。
One day people all over the world
Saw millions of green flags
ある日、世界じゅうの人たちが
数えきれない緑の旗を目にしていた。
Though the youngman would never come again
Now we knew what had tried to show

すぎるような気がします。もともと英語で浮かんできた詩なので
日本語で表し難いニュアンスがあるんでしょうね。
いっそ日本語番は英文にひっぱられないほうがいいような気がしてきました。
