How Much Do You Know About 100G OTU4 QSFP28 LR4 AND 100G CFP4 LR4 10KM

There are many form factors of 100G transceivers including CXP, CFP, CFP2, CPAK, CFP4 and QSFP28. Among them, QSFP28 and CFP4 optical transceiver are the most commonly used 100G transceivers.But how much do you know about them ? Today ,let’s talk more about them .


The 100G QSFP28 LR4 transceiver is a fully integrated 4x25Gbit/s optical transceiver module, designed for use in data centers and high performance computing network links on up to 10km of single mode fiber (SMF). They are compliant with QSFP28 MSA, IEEE 802.3ba and IEEE 802.3bm CAUI-4. When connected to data transmission links, it converts four input channels of 25Gb/s electrical data to four channels of LAN WDM optical signals and then multiplexes them into a signal channel for 100Gb/s optical transmission. While on the receiver side, the module demultiplexes the 100G optical signals into four output channels and converts them into electrical data. And the 100G CFP4 LR4 optical transceiver is a full duplex, photonic-integrated optic transceiver that provides a high-speed link with an aggregated data rate of either 103.125 Gbps or 111.81 Gbps over up to 10 km of SMF28. They are compliant with the CFP MSA, IEEE 802.3ba 100GBASE-LR4 and IEEE 802.3bm CAUI-4.Digital diagnostics functions are available via the MDIO interface, as specified by the CFP MSA and Application Note AN-20xx. The optical transceiver is compliant per the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. The block diagrams are shown as follows:

All the 100G QSFP28 and CFP4 optical module solutions are compatible with most of the OEM platforms like Cisco, HP, Juniper, Alcatel, Extreme, Arista, Brocade, Huawei ...etc. Both form factors have their advantages, depending on the application and required availability timeframe.Compared with 100G CFP4 LR4 10KM,though the CFP4 LR4 Supports modules up to 6W @2.5W/sq.in, the QSFP28 LR4 allows somewhat higher port density than CFP4 (~2mm cage pitch difference).What’s more ,it can share same port with 40G QSFP+ ,which is challenging for 100G CFP4 LR4. The disadvantage is that the QSFP28 LR4 Supports modules only up to 3.5W @2.6W/sq.in and the stacked port configuration is harder to cool. They are all used in Local area networks (LAN),Wide area networks (WAN),Ethernet switches and router applications and ITU-T OTU4 OTL4.4 applications.

News on August 31st,2017. It’s reported that Gigalight has pushed out new-style OTU4 100G optical transceiver, including 100G CFP2 LR4 10KM and 100G OTU4 QSFP28 LR4, before the coming of CIOE, which will be a very attractive choice for DPI clients.

Gigalight new-style OTU4 100G optical transceiver is available for four-channels full duplex communication, in which the transmission speed rate of each channel is 28Gbps, uses self-developed 100G ROSA, is accorded to CFP2 /QSFP28 MSA hardware standards, IEEE 802.3ba 100GBASE LR4 and OTU4 4I1-9D1F, and is with MDIO digital diagnostics and control functions. In addition, DML optical master with assembled LD chip and DML PIN acceptor with high flexibility are adopted, in which the power consumption of CFP2-LR4 is lower than 6W and the one of QSFP28 LR4 is lower than 3.5W, both of which have advantages of low power consumption, and available to transmit data of 100GbE and OTU4 in 10km single-mode optic fiber.

It’s recently reported that Gigalight has pushed out 200G QSFP DD SR8(2X 100GBASE-SR4) optical module officially and will have a demonstration on the spot during the CIOE2017 and ECOC2017 exhibition.

Gigalight 200G QSFP DD SR8 optical transceiver supports 8-channels 25Gb/s data channel, and its total bandwidth is suitable for 200GE Ethernet, conformed to QSFP-DD MSA. Besides, it has apparent advantages, such as the low power dissipation lower than 3.5W, outstanding design to solve problems about the accumulations of temperature, and has the digital diagnostic function. In the real testing environment, it is entirely accorded with the 100m OM4 fiber transmission applications without error code according to the strict error-code testing standard, lower than -152 . In addition, 200G QSFP DD SR8 optical transceiver is with high-quality optical eye diagram, high flexibility in accepting and high performance in electric eye jittering.

Gigalight 200G QSFP DD SR8 adopts the self-designed lens, assembles two self-developed optical engines, and has duplex 25Gbps data channel with 8 channels under the same packaging size as QSFP+ .
