「頭がぼんやりする」を英語で言うと

今日のレッスンで、一人の生徒さんが尋ねた質問です。
「最近ずっと、頭がすっきりしないというか、ぼんやりする感じなんですけど、こういうのって、どう言うんですか？」
なるほど。

これには、色々な言い方があるんですが、そのうちの一つにcotton woolというのがあります。

My head/brain is like cotton wool.
My head/brain feels like full of cotton wool.のように用います。

また、お料理のときに使う「ふるい」や「ざる」の類をsieveと言いますが、これを使った表現もあります。

My head is like a sieve.

日本語の場合は、お酒に酔わない人のことを「ざる」と言うことがありますが、英語の場合は、「記憶力が悪い、記憶に残らない」といった感じです。

それから、日本語の発想に似ていますが「頭に雲がかかっている」という言い方もあります。

My head is/feels cloudy.

cloudyの代わりに、foggy「霧がかかる」を使うこともできます。これはほぼ日本語と同じ発想ですね。

最近のレッスンで出た表現の中から、いくつか紹介します。

＜病気やけが、症状に関するもの＞

・入れ歯　false teeth またはdenture 部分入れ歯は、partial dentureと言います。
・歯周病　periodontal disease　　
・炎症があって、歯茎がはれている。
My gum is inflamed and swollen.
・歯がずきずき痛む。
この「ずきずき」感は、throbbingという言葉で表します。I have a throbbing pain with my tooth/teeth.
・肝臓を摘出して、（現在は）3分の1しか残っていない。
He has got most of his liver removed and only 1/3(one third) of it is left.
・指にひびが入った。
I had a hairline fracture on my finger.
・指にけがをした。
I injured my finger.

＜家事に関する表現＞
・洗濯物をたたむ。
I fold the laundry.
・電球を取り換える。
I change the light bulb/globe.
・アイロンをかける、モップをかける、部屋に掃除機をかける。
I iron the clothes, mop the floor, and vacuum the room.
・洗ったお皿をふく。
I dry the dishes.
・塩を振ってかきまぜる
I sprinkle salt and stir it.

・心が穏やかになる
I had peace of mind.
・無力さを感じる
I felt helpless.
・信号を無視して、交差点を直進した
The car ignored the traffic light and passed through the intersection.
・地獄耳
She can hear a pin drop from miles away.

He is a philanderer（不特定多数と付き合うような男）.
He is a flirt（おもわせぶりな男、浮気者）.

最近のレッスンで出てきた、「これって英語でどう言うの？」という表現を集めてみました。

・「娘の彼氏が、（結婚の）あいさつに来る」
My daughter's boyfriend is going to make a formal visit to us.

・「雪を足で踏み固める」
話題は、雪山をスキーやかんじきなどで歩くということ。そういうものを使わないと、新雪は歩きにくい。 We need to press the snow down before we can walk on it.
(歩きだす前に、雪を足で踏み固めなければならない。)

・「コンタクトをつけようとしたら、1枚が容器の底に貼りついていたため、突いて割ってしまった。それで、コンタクトレンズ屋に行って、新しいのと交換してもらった。」
When I was going to wear my contact lenses, one of them stuck at the bottom of the case. I pressed too hard and cracked it. So, I went to the optician to get a replacement.

・「おふろにゆっくり浸かるのが好き」
I like to sit back and relax in the bath.「浸かる」をsoak in the bathと言ってもいいですが、この場合は、この単語を使わなくても伝わります。

・「髪切ったんだね」
Did you get a haircut?　または　Did you get your hair cut?

・「その髪型、似合ってるね」
The hairstyle looks good on you. または　You look good with the hairstyle.

・「キッチンの動線」
この場合の「動線」というのは、一語で表すのは難しいようです。
The kitchen is functionally designed for an effective and easy access to your appliances.
（このキッチンは、動線を考えて機能的に設計してある）"appliances"は台所の器具全般を指しています。

・「スコッチの強い香りでむせた」
The strong smell of the Scotch whisky made me choke and cough.

・「新築祝い」
身内には、大きな物（家具や大型家電）、友達には庭木や観葉植物、トースターなど小さな電化製品などをあげるようです。
When someone builds a new house, we give him a house warming gift.
（誰かが家を新築したとき、新築祝いをあげます）

・「家をリフォームした」
We renovated/refurbished our house. "reform"という単語はありますが、建物の「改装」という意味では使いません。"reform adolescent criminals" （青少年犯罪者を更生させる）というように、「改心する、更生する」という意味になります。
