What"s really stimulating about Dame Vivienne

Dame Vivienne Westwood puts the drama into costume so reliably that her histrionic styling and agitprop proselytizing—this time for the Green Party—should come as a given. Also to be expected are agenda-led accessories ("Get a life," it said on the straps of wrist-slung bags) and ironically saccharine touches (aw, a BuzzFeed-cute kitty-cat tote). What"s really stimulating about Dame Vivienne, though, is the conservative (don"t worry: small C) stuff, because she understands the interaction of drape and ruche with the feminine body more intimately than any other working designer (although Galliano runs her quite close). Look 39, seemingly quiet-ish after all the fireworks before it, was this Red Label collection"s apotheosis: no fury, just shape and suggestive ripple. The top half of look 5—best to ignore the oversize diapers that cursed a few looks—cast this spell almost as powerfully. Giorgio Armani established the manifesto of his show with back-projections of the legendarily stylish director Luchino Visconti and poet Gabriele d"Annunzio. Other times, other places, but they"ve meant the world to Armani throughout his career, and it was easy to see their influence in this new collection (if not in specific details, at least in the general ambience of indulgence and sensuality). The mood of louche luxe didn"t discourage Armani from a little proportion play—with diagonally closing jackets and waistcoats, for instance, or with trousers tucked into boots (a jarringly militant moment). But his heart will always be in the dream world he has spun out of his visions of an ideal Italy in the twenties and thirties. And so he closed out his show with his niece Roberta accompanying the bullfighter Cayetano Rivera Ordóñez, star of the designer"s campaign for his new made-to-measure service, down the catwalk.
