Hanshiro Otoshi (Lava Tunnel) of Jogasaki coast

2006-07-02 | ITO-JOGASAKI AREA(2)

This is a kind of Lava Tunnel (or Lava Tube) where the top side has been collapsed down.
About 4,000 years ago, when Mt.Omuro erupted and the lave streamed down to Jogasaki coast, the surface of the lava in some areas cooled and hardened, while the inside of it was still hot and kept running out. Thus, the lava tunnel( or lava tube) with the hollow inside was formed. After many years, the top side of the tunnel was collapsed and it became like this appearance. Along Jogasaki coast, there are several lava tunnels formed like this. This is the one located just under the Jogasaki suspension bridge.
