その位置も含め、どこかアンバランスな仁王門を抜け、子院の間を通り過ぎると、小高くなったところに三重塔と阿弥陀堂を従え、本堂が威圧的に建つ。正面は七間で蔀戸、側面は六間で、外陣部分は三間、開き戸、蔀戸、引違戸と開放的で、吹き抜け的である。中央の階段はない方がいいようである。
外陣と内陣の間は透格子ー格子戸と菱欄間ーで区切るものの、人の空間と仏の空間の交流が意識されているようである。天井は内外陣ともに小組格天井とまた格子であり、格子で組まれた空間といえる。（「国宝太山寺本堂修理工事報告書」国宝太山寺本堂修理委員会著 1964）。

The boundary between the outer and the inner sanctuary is assembled by using the transmission grating - the lattice doors and the diamond-shaped lattice trausom. This is a style to combine the worship hall and the principal hall. That is, Human and Buddha are getting closer to put in communication.
