岡島との契約は、2年で250万ドル

In the midst of negotiations with potential ace Daisuke Matsuzaka, the Red Sox agreed Thursday to a $2.5 million, two-year contract with left-handed reliever Hideki Okajima, a deal that includes a $1.75 million team option for 2009.

Boston general manager Theo Epstein envisions Okajima as a setup man and occasional specialist against lefty batters. If the Red Sox sign Matsuzaka, the two pitchers can ease each other's transition to a new country.

Okajima, a 12-year veteran in Japan, was signed "on the merits" of his ability, Epstein said.

"He's going be a valuable member of our bullpen. But, if we do end up with two Japanese pitchers, that certainly would help the assimilation process, not only on the field but also off the field," Epstein said.

One of the things the Red Sox lacked most in 2006 was a lefty specialist, particularly during encounters against left-handed hitters like the Yankees' Bobby Abreu, Jason Giambi and Johnny Damon. The Red Sox stretched their arms wide in an effort to fill that void for '07, announcing on Thursday the signing of Japanese lefty reliever Hideki Okajima.

In addition to giving the Red Sox a lefty out of the bullpen, Okajima may also be able to help ease the transition -- and vice versa -- for star right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka.

"I just want to play for a team that gives a high rating to what I've done," Okajima said to Japanese reporters on Nov. 18. "I've got a clear direction regarding my future. I'm in pretty good shape now, and I think this is a very good opportunity for me [to make the switch to the Major Leagues]."

The Red Sox agreed to a contract with a Japanese pitcher — no, not that one. In the midst of negotiations with potential ace Daisuke Matsuzaka, the Red Sox agreed Thursday to a two-year contract with left-handed reliever Hideki Okajima.

The 30-year-old Okajima was 2-2 with a career-low 2.14 ERA and four saves in 55 games last season with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters of the Pacific League. He was traded to the Fighters in March after 11 seasons with the Central League's Yomiuri Giants, then became a free agent after the season.

In 439 Japanese major league games, he is 34-32 with a 3.36 ERA and 41 saves.

Boston has until Dec. 14 to sign Matsuzaka, the ace of the Seibu Lions and MVP of this year's World Baseball Classic. The Red Sox bid $51,111,111 for the rights to negotiate with Matsuzaka but pay only if they sign him.

CEO Larry Lucchino is expected back in Boston shortly after meeting with the leaders of the Seibu Lions. One of the purposes of Lucchino’s trip was to forge a long-term relationship with the Lions. That relationship will undoubtedly be regarded as healthy if the two teams can convince Matsuzaka and his agent, Scott Boras, to strike a deal with the Sox.

The initial offer was believed to be for $7 million to $8 million a year, about half of what Matsuzaka is seeking. Lucchino spoke of the Sox making a ‘‘fair” and ‘‘comprehensive” offer at a Tokyo press conference.

Boras offered this reaction to Lucchino’s visit: ‘‘The Red Sox and myself, out of respect for the Seibu Lions, understand that this is a situation where the player may go to one team (the Red Sox) or go back to the team he played for (the Lions). We have mutually agreed to keep all aspects of the negotiation private. Despite comments from members of the Red Sox organization, we intend to honor that agreement.”

レッドソックス、日ハム岡島と契約

2006-12-01 05:35:53 | MLB
Boston Heraldより抜粋。
As reported earlier today by the Herald, the Red Sox announced that they have signed Japanese relief pitcher Hideki Okajima to a two-year contract with an option for the 2009 season.

In addition to his potential contributions as the left-handed specialist in the Sox’ bullpen, having Okajima on board can only help the Sox in their quest to sign ace pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka。

Okajima, who will turn 31 on Christmas, is a 12-year veteran of Nippon Professional Baseball. He has been a quality setup man in the Japanese leagues, playing 11 years for the Yomiuri Giants and last season for the Nippon Ham Fighters.

Last season, Okajima went 2-2 with a career-best 2.14 ERA in 55 appearances for the Ham Fighters. In his career, he is 34-32 with a 3.36 ERA. He has pitched 642 innings in 439 games, recording 41 saves while striking out 681.

Although primarily used as a set-up man, Okajima did save 25 games for the Giants in 2001. That year he appeared in 58 games, striking out 70 in 62 innings of work. The year before, he struck out 102 in 72.1 innings.

Though not said to be a hard thrower, the word is that Okakjima has a devastating curveball.
