「Heroes of Might and Magic III」の拡張パック「Armageddon's Blade」のキャンペーン「Armageddon's Blade」のシナリオ4「Maker of Sorrows」をプレイしました。
マップサイズはL、難易度はExpert、チームカラーはRed で敵はTeal となっています。
シナリオ開始前に、5 Pit Lords か、Loins of Legion か、Upg. Kennels からひとつを選択します。Inferno の中では、Cerberi は序盤から使いやすいCreature なので、Upg. Kennels にしておきます。
冒頭、まずはXeron の独白から始まります。
My king seeks to build Armageddon's Blade. With this fabled weapon he will set the world on fire. I have the elements to build the blade, but only the grand Forgesmith Khazandar can fashion it from the relics I carry. Again, a collection of mysterious heroes gather to end my quest. Ironically,they have surrounded Khazandar, but have not killed him as I would. This proves they are soft. They will not stand in my way.
前シナリオ「Seeking Armageddon」でArmageddon's Blade を造るための材料をそろえたので、今度はArmageddon's Blade を造ることができる人物、Grand Forgesmith Khazandar を探し出差無くてはなりません。
Misterious Heroes （多分、Conflux の人たちだと思いますが）がKhazandar の周りにいて、彼を警護しています。しかし皮肉なことに、彼らがKhazandar を殺せないということが、Lucifer の望むところでもある訳なんですよね。Khazandar を殺してしまえば、もうArmageddon's Blade を入手することはできなくなってしまうわけですから。
冒頭、Lucifer から以下のメッセージが届きます。
"Sleen has provided us with the name of the man whom you will seek out. Grand Forgesmith Khazandar, an alchemist and weaponsmith of great repute is the sole man in all Antagarich who has the knowledge and skill to build Armageddon's Blade. Find him Xeron. Find him and force him to construct the Blade, for if he does not consent, make him suffer until he does. My vision will become reality and you will carry it out for me.
According to Sleen, he is being held somewhere in this area of the Contested Lands, protected by those accursed Confluxes. Destroy them. Make them suffer for daring to stand in the way of destiny. You are too close to achieving my victory to be held off by this rabble. Succeed and the rewards will be glorious. I shall wear your skin as a cloak and your eyes shall adorn my rings should you fail me."
As the vision fades from the red crystal shard, you stand and summon Sleen to your side. Xex, your faithful servant, "bamfs" away and returns shortly with the slimy human.
あ、Sleen 、生きていたのか。しぶといね、ホント。
こちらの本拠地は、マップ北部、北東部、東部、南東部と、4箇所にあるInferno 。Hero は前シナリオでLevel 17 まで鍛えたXeron と、12Level Hero が3人。新規に1人雇い、5人体制で周囲を巡回します。
マップ東側にあるEeofol の領地の西側には山脈があり、その向こう側が敵地であるContested Lands。そして両国を行き来するためには、3箇所に設えられているGarrison を抜けなくてはなりません。ただし、南北には水辺もありますので、場合によっては船を使われる可能性もあります。こちらからは船を造ることができないので、当面は関係ありませんけどね。
しかしこのキャンペーンはマップを二分されている、こんな感じのマップばかりですね。
11日目、Sleen からKhazandar の居所についての報告があります。
"I bring news Your Eminence," Sleen states fearfully. "The Grand Forgesmith Khazandar is being held in a simple hut somewhere in the tunnels left behind by the Overlords of Nighon when they invaded Erathia not long ago. He should be easy to find as he will be heavily guarded."
どうやらKhazandar は、Nighon から掘られたトンネルの跡地に隠れているようです。ということは、このシナリオでは地下世界も登場するんでしょうかね。
しかしそれなりに有益な情報をもってくるSleen ですが、相変わらずXeron には虐げられているようです。
本来なら軍勢を一極集中させたいところなのですが、町が4つありますし、マップも広いので、真中にあるGarrison はしばらく放置して、北と南の2方面から侵攻していく事にします。始めは北にいたXeron をメインに戦っていこうかと思いましたが、北部の探索に手間取ってしまったことと、南東のInferno にはDevil を雇用できる施設が建設済みだったことから、まず先に南にあるGarrison を突破することにします。
Garrison を守るのはConflux のCreature ですが、射撃系のCreatureが居なかったので、無傷で突破。近くにTeal のHero がいますが、それ程強くはなさそうです。ただエリアが広いので、追いかけっこを始めるとキリがありません。当面は探索メインで行くことにします。
21日目。Enroth とConflux が同盟を結んだという報告が入ります。
"My master, I come to pass on a message sent by our spies in The Contested Lands. They tell of a meeting between the Elemental Lords of the Conflux and Queen Catherine. They also say an agreement has been reached between the two armies. They are now allies!"
しかしXeron 、怒りに任せてこの使者を殺してしまいます。Sleen だけじゃなくて、誰に対しても乱暴だなぁ。味方なんだから、いちいち殺してるんじゃないよ。
Garrison を抜けてからマップの南沿いを走り、南部にあったConflux を攻略。さらに少し足を伸ばして、南西の隅にあったConflux も攻略します。いずれも町の開発は中途半端なのですが、本拠地とは距離があるので、Conflux 部隊の編成にも着手しないといけませんね。
満を持して、Xeron で北側のGarrison を突破。ついでにすぐ近くにあったConflux を落とします。Devil の数が少ないのが辛いのですが、少数のDevil より多数のEfreet Sultan の方が使えるから問題はありません。
これで都合3つのConflux を落としましたが、Teal 軍にもそれなりに強いHero がいるので、全部を維持し続けるのは大変です。敵の大軍勢をなんとかするには、それよりも圧倒的に強い軍勢をぶつけるか、そうでなければ自然に町や他のHero に分け与えられることによって拡散するのを待つかです。現時点では、後者の戦略を取るしかなさそうです。
実際、南部と南西部にある2つのConflux は、しばらく取ったり取られたりします。そのうち、南西部周辺には強力な軍勢を率いたHero が現われ、ちょっと手を出せなくなってしまいました。
38日目。Xex によって、Xeron の母が戦争で命を落としたという報せがもたらされます。悪魔の戦士Xeron にとっても、母の落命はそうとうなショックだったようです。しかしこのことによって、あるいは彼の残忍さに拍車がかかることになるのかもしれません。
それはさておき、しばらく小競り合いを続けているうちに、局面は大分こちらの有利になってきました。一番厄介だったのは南西のConflux に篭っているHero だったのですが、Efreet Sultan を大量に持たせたXeron で奪還に成功します。
他のTeal のHero を眺めてみると、今撃破したヤツよりも強いのはいなそうなので、このままXeron で北上し、マップ西部にあるConflux を攻略。ついでにもう1つ北上して、マップ北西部にあったConflux も攻略してしまいます。
どうもマップの端のほうから攻略していくクセがあるので、どうしても中央部が未探索のまま残ってしまいます。大分余裕が出てきたので、数人の弱いHero をつかってマップの探索を進めます。
マップ中央やや西寄りに、地下への入口を発見。ちょっと降りてみますが、入口から通路が放射状に何本も伸びているという構造になっています。こういうの形状って、探索するのに時間がかかっちゃうんだよなぁ……。
で、そのうちの1本を進んでいくと、通路の奥に、Lots of Phoenixes がいました。その後他の通路にも行ってみましたが、A Swarm of Energy Elementals とか、A Swarm of Storm Elementals とか、いずれも一筋縄ではいかない連中が行く手を遮っています。こりゃ、主力部隊を連れてこないと進めないなぁ……。
66日目。Xex から、Erathia 軍の侵攻についての報告が寄せられます。しかし悪い報告を持ってきたそのXex の顔面に、Xeron はなんと裏拳をぶち込んでしまうのでした。それによってXeron は、懐刀だったXex の怒りも買ってしまいます。うーん、悪役なんで最終的には倒される運命なんでしょうけれども、Xeron も周囲の状況が色々とヤバくなっていきますなぁ。
地上はまだ全部片付いてはいないのですが、地下の方が厳しそうなので、Xeron を地下の探索に向かわせます。地下通路のうちの4本には強い敵が立ちふさがっているのですが、1本だけ、敵がいない代わりに4本のBorder Guard が立っている通路がありました。
Guard を突破したその先にKhazandar がいる小屋が建っているのですが、その前には最後の番人・Inteus the Elementalist がかなりの大軍勢を率いて立ちふさがっていたのでした。うひゃー。
ちょっとキツイかとも思いましたが、実はこちらも結構強くて、案外すんなり勝ってしまいました。Inteus を倒し、ようやくKhazandar にお目見えです。
"Year? What do youwant?" the old man asks most irritatedly. "Speak quickly, I'm a busy man."
"I have come a long way old man. I hear you are the one called Khazandar, the Grand Forgesmith, and you are he who can harness Armageddon. I've brought the legendary artifacts needed for the ritual. All I need now is for you to make me Armageddon's Blade."
The old man looks at you, contemplates his words carefully, and puffs on his pipe. "So, you have finally come to ask me to build my last great piece. Yes I'm Khazandar and yes, I'll make your Blade. A few conditions though. First, I want to be spared your Armageddon. Second, I want to be paid... well paid. I figure 30,000 pieces of Gold ought to do it. Once I get that, you may take the artifacts to my apprentice and I shall build your sword."
ありゃ、Khazandar は案外、恐ろしい武器を作ること自体には抵抗はないみたいですね。それがGrand Forgesmith のGrand Forgesmith たる所以かも知れませんけどね。
資源を売って30,000Gold を用立て、これでようやく任務達成かと思いきや、もう1つヤボ用を言いつけられてしまいました。
"Finally! Here, give the 30,000 Gold to me! By the way, since you are going there anyway, take this to my apprentice, he's been looking for it. I will be along shortly once my work here is done. Tｈen I shall make your weapon,"
ほう、鬼のXeron さんにお使いを命じるとはいい度胸じゃねぇか、とも思いますが、今のところはKhazandar の方が立場は上。しかたなく、彼の弟子に預かったSphere of Permanence を渡しに行く事にします。
ここに来る前に、地下にいたLot of Phoenixes を倒してきたのですが、その奥にはPurple Border Guard があってそれ以上進むことができなかったんですよね。Border Guard を通ることができるようになるテントはKhazandar がいた小屋のすぐそばにありましたので、たぶん弟子が居るのはそこじゃないかと思います。
その頃地上ではようやくTeal 軍を全滅させた、と思ったのですが、なぜかTeal 軍敗北のメッセージが出てきません。ひょっとして、地下のどこかに隠れ家でも残ってるのかなぁ？ まあ、どのみち大した脅威にはならないと思いますけどね。
Purple Border Guard を抜けると、そこにはKhazandar の弟子が待ち受けていました。
"My master said you would be coming. He told me to meet you here and to expect that several artifacts would be delivered. Do you have the Sword of Hellfire, Breastplate of Brimstone, Shield of the Damned? Oh yes, he also mentioned you would be bringing my Sphere of Permanence. I've been missing that for many months now. Do you have all of these things?"
Khazandar and his apprentice go in the back and soon is heard the sounds of spells being cast, the pounding of hammer on steel, and the swearing of an injured hand now and again. After some time, old man Khazandar emerges from the forge bearing a blade wrapped in thick cloth. He unwraps the cloth slowly and a pulsating light emanates from the weapon so recently forged. The blade looks odd, like an eagle and the blade has a strange shape to it, yet it bears the unmistakeable appearance of a weapon most foul.
"Here is your blade, Dark One. Thank you for your payment. Now leave me be."
かくしてXeron は、脅威の力を秘めた武器・Armageddon's Blade を入手するとこに成功したのでありました。
クリア日数は3ヶ月と1週間と2日なので、93日。結構かかりましたね。勝利条件が相手を全滅させることならわかりやすいのですが、それ以外である場合、どうしても余計な手間がかかってしまうことになりがちです。マップが広かったこともありますけどね。何をなすべきかが事前にわかっていれば、もっと効率よく仕事をこなせたとは思います。
Maker of Sorrows
Xeron must seek out Grand Forgesmith Khazandar and force him to make Armageddon's Blade. If Xeron falls, all is lost. Xeron is only allowed to advance to 24th Level.
