And John almost....

Beware of spoilers. I mean, really.

'Please...don't be......dead.'

The way his voice breaks up on the word 'dead'. And how he says:

You told me once that you weren’t a hero… um... there were times I didn’t even think you were human, but, let me tell you this: you were the best man and human… human being I’ve ever known, and no-one will ever convince me that you told me a lie, that’s… uh. There.

I was so alone, and I owe you so much.

Look, please, there’s just one more thing, one more thing, one more miracle, Sherlock, for me. Don’t. Be. Dead. Would you do that, just for me, just… stop it. Stop this!

And then, John almost salutes....

I'm sorry for all the Star Trek comparisons which I'm sure the writers never intended, but for me, Star Trek is a basic point of reference, especially for things of the heart. So do bear with me.

In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Kirk says of his best friend, 'Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most ... human.' His voice breaks at the word 'most', and then Kirk clenches his jaws, tries to control his faltering voice, and throws out the word, 'human'. Gruffly, defiantly, almost angrily.  I wallow in tears.

That scene is a very special, very important one for me, and I remembered that scene as I watched John grieve for his best friend. The friend he said, 'All right, Spock' to, in the previous episode.

Don't grieve John. Your friend will be back. Just as Spock was.
