☆☆☆ 鬼ようずの由来（The origin of ‘Oniyoozu.'） ☆☆☆
大風が吹き、荒波が立つ環境の中でも、悠然と大空に
舞い揚がり勇姿を誇る「鬼ようず」！！！
'Oniyoozu' grandly flies in the vast sky against fierce winds and wild waves!!!
日本海に浮かぶ絶海の孤島「山口県萩市・見島」に伝わる凧
‘Oniyoozu' is a kite that traditionally has been made from generation to generation on the isolated island of Mishima in Hagi City, Yamaguchi. Mishima is located 50 km offshore of Hagi City.
山口県萩市の沖合約５０キロメートルの日本海に浮かぶ見島に古くから伝わる大きな凧“おにようず"は漢字で『鬼楊子』と書き、一説には平安時代（西暦１０００頃）からあったと言われています。
Some people say that the history of ‘Oniyoozu (鬼楊子 in Chinese characters)' traces back to Heian period (A.D.1000).
子どもが出生した年の暮れ、親戚、縁者はもちろん、知人、友人等多くの人々が傘紙を持ち寄り、鬼の面を描いて、子どもが威勢よく大空高く舞い揚がる凧の如く、大きく元気に成長するようにという願いを込めて作るものです。
When babies are born on Mishima island, their families, relatives, and friends gather and create 'Oniyoozu' at the end of the year. Each person brings paper used to make umbrellas in order to create ‘Oniyoozu.' They make ‘Oniyoozu' with the wish that their babies will grow healthy and strong just like a kite flying high and grandly in the vast sky.
大ようずと呼ばれるものは畳６枚程もあり、そこに描かれている鬼の面は悪事・災難の魔除けの意味も含んでいます。
A big "Oniyoozu'is the size of six tatami mats. Its believed that the face protects against misfortune and disaster.
そして、正月には多くの人が集まって大ようず揚げを行い、子どものゆく末を祝福するとともに、家の繁栄を祈念する風習も残っています。
On New Year's day, many people gather and fly ‘Oniyoozu.' They pray for the prosperity of their children and families.
また、小さい鬼ようずは家の玄関や店頭に飾って家運隆盛、商売繁盛の縁起物として喜ばれています。
People put small ‘Oniyoozu' at the entrance of houses and stores for the prosperity of families and businesses.
