The Moroccan flag, which is dominated by the red color except for a five-pointed green star, has completed a hundred years of its life, since its creation by royal decree by Sultan Moulay Youssef, on November 17, 1915.

And the Royal Decree issued in that year stated: “Our honorable consideration necessitated distinguishing our happy flag by placing the five-pointed Sulaymani ring in its middle in green, hoping from God Almighty to keep it flying with the winds of happiness and turnout in the present and the future, Amen and peace.”

The reasons for this distinction, according to the Dahir, are: “In view of the advancement of the affairs of our honorable kingdom and the spread of the brigades of its glory and pride, and when the circumstances required it to be designated with a flag that distinguished it from other kingdoms, and where the banner of our holy ancestors was similar to some flags, especially those used in marine signals.”

It may be understood from the Dahir that there was no component in the Moroccan flag other than the red color and that due to the confusion that occurred between it and the flags of other countries that dominated this color, Morocco chose to place the five-pointed Sulaimani ring in the center of its flag in clear green color, however, there are other opinions that indicated That the Moroccan flag before 1917 did not consist of a single element and that a six-pointed star was in the middle of it, and there is a group of pictures of a red flag with a six-pointed star on the Internet, attributed by many sites to the previous Moroccan flag.

Also, although the Royal Dahir indicates that the decision to change the Moroccan flag is a decision of the Sultan, there are some opinions, including what was published before the term of the secular activist Ahmed Assid, indicating that the French Resident General, General Lyautey, was the one who placed the Moroccan flag, In addition to the Moroccan national anthem.

"The one who drew the current flag, who was in charge of the store affairs at that time, was Kaddour bin Ghabrit. It is true that General Lyautey signed the Dahir decision in the Official Gazette, but the conception and design of the flag belonged to Ibn Ghabrit and not someone else," says Hassan Aourid, the historian. The former ruler of the Kingdom of Morocco pointed out that Morocco before 1917 did not know the design of a national flag in the modern sense, but there were official flags for special occasions.

And Orid adds to CNN in Arabic: "The Moroccan flags before 1917 were not only red but had a six-pointed star in the middle of it. However, this star did not refer to the Jewish heritage and had absolutely nothing to do with Zionism. Rather, it was part of the geometric shapes that civilization was known for." Islamic civilization, which greatly influenced the Jewish heritage, and not the other way around.

On the connotations of the Moroccan flag, Orid said: "Ben Ghabrit was inspired by the red color from the word 'Maroc', which is a distortion of the word Marrakech, the red city. As for the green, it refers to the palm trees of Marrakesh, and the five ribs refer to the pillars of Islam."
