It was really FREEZING cold last Friday night(last week) with snow falling and strong wind blowing
when I found an old man wondering around looking for something on the snow-covered ground in the dark.
I could guess that he was a homeless man from his clothes. He was wearing only ragged clothes,
no winter coat on.
I drove by him first but couldn’t help thinking about him and returned the road.
That time, he was in a public phone box, which was rather big( about three times wider than normal ones),
seemed trying making a phone call.
In my car I had a warm rug and bento(boxed food/dinner). So I grabbed them and approached him.
At the same time two guys also approached him, then opened the phone box door and talked him very angrily.
‘We are police. We watched you for a few minutes and we know you are just pretending making a phone call.
This place is for public use and you gotta get out of here right away!! Get out and go somewhere else!’
Then the old man said, ‘I need to call back to someone but he doesn’t answer.’
The police went on, ’No, don’t tell a lie to us! You are here because outside is cold.
So get out and keep walking to somewhere. Its not allowed to stay or sit on the streat, either.’
The old man: ‘ But I have no place to go and outside is freezing since it's very snowy…’
Police: ‘It’s NONE OF OUR BUSINESS, JUST BE GONE SOMEWHERE.’
Old man replied in a very frightened voice, ’I see, I see, I’ll get out of here. But please don’t hit me,
please promise you won’t get rough with me, please, please…’
Police: ‘Get out of here immediately if you don’t want me to hit you.’
I was standing nearby for about 10 minutes waiting for a chance to talk to the old man.
One policeman asked me why I was there and I told him that I wanted to give him a rug and food.
Then he said,’ No, don’t give him anything. You don’t have to that. Its not good.’
This reply was what I had expected to receive and is kind of natural(reaction) in Japan.
I said to him, ‘But he doesn’t have any place to go in this frigid cold, right?
Please let me give him this.’
(I also asked them to take him to KOBAN to give him a shed(?) but they said they couldn’t do that.)
I handed a rug and food, drink to the old man when he came out.
He looked very surprised but then smiled at me saying thank you.
His hands were all brown and I thought first he was wearing baseball gloves.
it was a really freezing night and I didn’t think it was the only right way to just yell
and throw shuddering old man out of a public phone box to a frigid outside with snow and strong wind,
even more not allowing him just to stay/sit outside nearby(since all streets are public places).
I hoped that the police man could talk more kindly to the old man and try to think better way
for him other than yelling and throwing him out even though that was their job.
I wanted to say so to them but didn’t want to make the situation worse. Also My body didn’t stop
shaking from the coldness.
It was only for about 10 minutes that I was standing outside there
but frozen to my bones and couldn't take off my coat for a few hours
even after I came home and turned the heater on.
We had some snow again after that night and I still think about the homeless man and the insident
(as well as the way of the society we should have in Japan).
(I looked for the man again for a few times but couldn't find.)
BTW,the reason I wrote this and why I think about this homeless and insident was
I strongly remember the action, I witnessed before,of a friend of mine who was from US
and one word/question he asked me. It gave me an impact/shock and influenced
my thinking ways as a Japanese.
