New IBM chief Virginia Rometty was at the Masters after all.
In a pink jacket, however, not a green one.

Rometty, sitting in a lawn chair, had a prime location just a few rows behind the 18th green.,moncler clairy parka are available from selective retailers all across the world. She is known to be an avid scuba diver, not much of a golfer. But she knew enough about the game to applaud several good shots into the final hole.

Rometty has brought the issue of female members at Augusta National back to the fore since being named IBM's new chief executive earlier this year. Augusta National's chairman, Billy Payne, has refused to provide a substantive answer to that question, saying the club's membership decisions are private.

IBM has also declined to comment, and security around the company's hospitality cabin at Augusta was tight all week.

The issue of female members at Augusta was a hot-button issue in 2002, when Martha Burk, then the chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations,Footwear included Discount Fjallraven Parka Jacket Online in the back extending down to the thick heel. campaigned for Augusta National to end its all-male membership and threatened to boycott companies whose executives belonged to the club. Hootie Johnson, Payne's predecessor, responded by cutting loose corporate backers and the Masters was televised without commercials for the next two years.

A planned protest before the 2003 Masters was a dud and the issue slowly receded.

When Payne replaced Johnson as chairman of the club and of the Masters tournament in 2006, he said there was "no specific timetable" for admitting women. The question was raised at the 2007 and 2010 Masters. Both times, Payne rebuffed questions, repeating the club's policy on privacy relating to membership issues.

Because the secrecy level at Augusta National is so high, there could already be a female member that nobody knows about. Though members are visible during the Masters because of their iconic green jackets, not every member was in attendance this week.

Goose Cove polar bear didn't have rabies

2012-04-10 11:23:23 | outerwear

Rabies test results of the polar bear that stormed through Goose Cove on March 29 have come back negative, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Natural Resources.

The bear was deemed aggressive by conservation officers after it damaged four separate houses, entered one kitchen and killed a ewe, a sheep, and two ducks - leaving their bloody carcasses for their owner, Mike Sexton, to clean up.

The Department said in a previous e-mail to the Pen that the decision to shoot the bear came after weather conditions prevented a helicopter from landing, which would allow officials to tranquilize the animal.

However, the bear was considered a threat to the public and was shot when it had turned back to the barn it had ransacked earlier.

A sample of the rabies test has been sent to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for confirmation of the diagnosis.

The Department of Natural Resources also said they responded to reports of a polar bear in the Stock Pond area on April 6 but "no damage was reported and the bear made its way back to the sea ice."

On March 31, there were more reports of polar bear sightings near Cook's Harbour by local residents attending Laid Day and two helicopters were spotted combing the terrain near Pistolet Bay.

The Department of Natural Resources sent out a news release on April 3, advising communities along the Labrador coast to "be vigilant" because the bears can be unpredictable.

The release said that department officials monitor the movements of these animals and cautioned people not to approach a polar bear.

According to the release, if someone should happen to see a bear,Discount Moncler Parka Outlet they should stay calm, give the animal space, back away to get out of the situation but never run, avoid direct eye contact with the bear, and "if you must speak, do so calmly and firmly."

Waterfowl hunters slowed by ‘no-winter' weather

2012-04-10 11:22:33 | cheap canada goose

IT WOULD be easy to believe that a lot of birds and ground animals were positively affected by the “nowinter'' of 2011-2012, but that may not be the case.

We know that the waterfowl hunters on Great Bay, especially the late season hunters, had a very light kill and it wouldn't be surprising if many of them went without ducks or geese for their efforts.mens parka

Living right on the shores of Great Bay, we have always paid attention to the amount of gunfire we would hear, from early to late waterfowl season.

This year's early season was probably normal, in the amount of shooting. But in the late season it was very evident that although we witnessed plenty of boat action and hunters on the move, the shooting was way off. In fact, on some of the weekend days during the late season, when we normally hear a steady flow of waterfowl gun volleys, some days went by with hardly a shot fired.Online Belstaff Jackets Shop Sale So you had to take out of this a positive in one way — that the light waterfowl kill put a positive effect on the overall waterfowl population.

This might create a false sense of security for us waterfowl lovers. Scientists for many years have reported that the hunting of these birds has little to no effect on their populations. (Hard to figure that one out, isn't it?) They claim that it's water and water levels that have a huge effect on nesting populations in the spring that limit the duck populations and can have somewhat of an effect also on geese.

So what's the big deal? The big deal is that just about all across the waterfowl breeding areas in both the United Statea and Canada, snowfall was very light and warm weather was prevalent. Which means that many of the traditional waterfowl nesting areas that need water will have very low levels or probably plenty may not have had any flooding because there was little to no snow pack for the melt or not enough rain during the winter to keep the water levels up.

Waterfowl biologists are not too optimistic about this spring's nesting results. Nor are the biologists from the two largest waterfowl conservation non-profit organizations, Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl Foundation.

DU specializes in land purchases and easements and water management and creation and maintenance of duck nesting areas while Delta stresses scientific research as well as a new and very popular program of predator control in the nesting areas.

We are members of and support both of these organizations and have witnessed a huge positive effect that both have produced in their works.

But given the economy and the recession, both have been hurting for funding, and Congress often see cuts in conservation areas as an easy way out.cheap canada goose One of DU's major funding sources is its Wetlands Conservation Galas.

The state's largest one is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, at the Radisson Hotel, 700 Elm St., in Manchester. There are cocktails, entertainment, raffles, canada goose cheap jackets games and auctions and raffles.

We've been to and hosted a bunch of DU events and never left one without a smile on our face.

Delta provides full financial support for many budding waterfowl biologists to earn college degrees and uses them as interns during the summer.

It's been disputed by many that predator control has no effect on duck nesting success but Delta has irrefutable evidence from its workings that predator control can have an enormous impact on the survival of both the hen ducks and also their broods, with some success ratios being close to 100 percent.

At our waterfowl camp in northern Maine, we do harvest quite a few ducks and geese. For every duck taken the hunter has to donate a dollar to the Duck a Buck, discount women canada goose coats Goose a Deuce-coffee can.

For every goose taken the donation goes up to two dollars. Over the years we feel that we've made a nice impact on Delta's workings. Because it's like nickel and diming, it's easy to do but at the end of the season it all adds up.

Days Gone By: Turn in the March weather can't keep Gold Rush prospectors out of the fields

2012-04-09 11:33:11 | outerwear

The weather had turned rather nice by early March 1849 in San Francisco, which led to a huge exodus to the gold fields, reported the town's newspaper, Alta California.

"Already the note of preparation has been sounded, and many have started on their summer tour in search of gold. The fine weather, which was experienced for two weeks previous to our last publication, appeared so sure an indication of the winter's end that large parties left the town for the mines."

But the good weather had turned stormy by mid-March.

"The recent rains and snows, however, we are sorry to say, must have proved a damper to their jackets, if not their spirits." The paper advised the gold hunters not to be such in a hurry to get to the mines, because traveling could be difficult. The rivers were running very high.

"The ground will be wet and cold for some time to come, and those who are too anxious to gather the precious ore will expose themselves to disease and death. There is no necessity for great haste, as new deposits of the glittering substance are almost daily discovered."

Despite the rain, hundreds were already on their way to the mines, and thousands were in the preparation stages. The Alta noted that one launch that had left the city a few days earlier had carried 130 passengers.

So if people were determined to get to the gold fields even if the weather was bad, where should they go? The Alta had some advice, adding that better information could be had once the prospective miners got to Sacramento or Stockton.

"At this season of the year, when the state of the streams is a matter of such uncertainty, it is very difficult to give a good opinion as to which is the best locality for digging, but our impression is that some of the numerous 'dry diggings' as they are termed, will be found the most accessible until the abatement of the waters."

The Alta warned that gold seekers should not burden themselves with excessive baggage.

"It will be useless and gives a great deal of unnecessary trouble. This is a 100% Discount Moncler Parka Coats Online,we don't have anything that's 100 percent. Large quantities of clothing for personal use should not be taken, as it is difficult to procure transportation for it, and it will not contribute to the convenience of the owner."

The paper recommended that would-be miners should take a launch to either Sacramento or Stockton and then buy a couple of horses or mules, one animal to ride and the other to carry baggage.
