Washington National Cathedral

　ワシントン大聖堂は世界で6番目に大きなネオゴシック様式の大聖堂で、ワシントンの北西部、マサチューセッツ通りとウィスコンシン通りにあります。

　ずっと行きたかったのですけど、今日が初めての訪問になりました。外観は荘厳で圧倒的です。時間があまりなかったので中に入るつもりはなかったのですけど、また来れるかどうか分からなかったので中にも入ってみました。内部も素晴らしいの一言です。ステンドグラスや絵画、像などに感銘を受けました。





　「国立」という言葉は、大聖堂があらゆる宗派に開かれていることを意味します。発案はジョージ・ワシントンですが、議会が建築計画を承認したのは1893年1月6日。建設は1907年9月29日に始まり、セオドア・ローズヴェルト大統領の見守る中礎石が敷かれました。ジョージ・W・ブッシュ大統領が参列する中、1990年に完成しました。また「国立」という言葉は政府がそのプロジェクトにお金を出していることを意味しません。財団が資金を集め運営しています。

　ワシントン大聖堂は有名なアメリカ市民の墓所としても有名です。ウッドロー・ウィルソンや、ヘレン・ケラーとアニー・サリバンが眠っています。ヘレン・ケラーとアニー・サリバンの墓所は分かりにくいのですけど、ガイドに尋ねれば教えてくれます。

　ワシントン大聖堂の見学の後、ポトマック・ミルズ・モールに行ってきました。今帰ってきたばかりですけど、これからお友達と夕食を食べにいくつもりです。

　Washington National Cathedral is the sixth largest neogothic cathedral in the world, and it is located at Massachusetts and Wisconsin Avenues in the northwest quadrant of Washington.

　I have wanted to go the cathedral since I came here, and I went there for the first time today. The appearance was spectacular and overwhelming. I didn’t plan to enter the structure because I didn’t have enough time. However, I am not sure I will be able to come back again, so I went to see the inside. It was splendid and magnificent. I was impressed to see the stained glasses, pictures and images of sacred subject.

　“National” means that the cathedral is open to any religious denomination. The intent originated in George Washington, but it was not until on January 6, 1893 that U.S. Congress approved the plan of building. Construction began on September 29, 1907, when the foundation stone was laid in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt. The finial was placed in the presence of President George H. W. Bush in 1990. “National” does not mean that government funded the project. The foundation gathers funds and operates it.

　It is also famous for final rest place of many notable citizens. The list includes Woodrow Wilson, Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan. The latter are located underground where visitors are difficult to find. But if you ask the guides, you will get there.


　After I finish sightseeing of the Washington National Cathedral, we went to Potomac Mills Mall. I have just gotten home and I am eating out with my friends tonight.
