ペルシャの王キュロスの第三年に、ベルテシャザルという名のダニエルに、御言葉が啓示されました。

In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a word was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the word was true, even a great warfare; and he gave heed to the word, and had understanding of the vision.
2 In those days I Daniel was mourning three whole weeks.
3 I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled. 
4 And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Tigris,
5 I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz;
6 his body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as torches of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to burnished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.
7 And I Daniel alone saw the vision; for the men that were with me saw not the vision; howbeit a great trembling fell upon them, and they fled to hide themselves.
8 So that I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me; for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength.
9 Yet heard I the voice of his words; and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I fallen into a deep sleep on my face, with my face toward the ground.
10 And, behold, a hand touched me, which set me tottering upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands.
11 And he said unto me: 'O Daniel, thou man greatly beloved, give heed unto the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright; for now am I sent unto thee'; and when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling.
12 Then said he unto me: 'Fear not, Daniel; for from the first day that thou didst set thy heart to understand, and to humble thyself before thy God, thy words were heard; and I am come because of thy words.
13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days; but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I was left over there beside the kings of Persia.
14 Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the end of days; for there is yet a vision for the days.'
15 And when he had spoken unto me according to these words, I set my face toward the ground, and was dumb.
16 And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips; then I opened my mouth, and spoke and said unto him that stood before me: 'O my lord, by reason of the vision my pains are come upon me, and I retain no strength.
17 For how can this servant of my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither was there breath left in me.'
18 Then there touched me again one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me.
19 And he said: 'O man greatly beloved, fear not! peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong.' And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said: 'Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.'
20 Then said he: Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia; and when I go forth, lo, the prince of Greece shall come.
21 Howbeit I will declare unto thee that which is inscribed in the writing of truth; and there is none that holdeth with me against these, except Michael your prince.

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
2 The rich and the poor meet together--the LORD is the maker of them all.
3 A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the thoughtless pass on, and are punished.
4 The reward of humility is the fear of the LORD, even riches, and honour, and life.
5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward; he that keepeth his soul holdeth himself far from them.
6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old, he will not depart from it.
7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
8 He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity; and the rod of his wrath shall fail.
9 He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
10 Cast out the scorner, and contention will go out; yea, strife and shame will cease.
11 He that loveth pureness of heart, that hath grace in his lips, the king shall be his friend.
12 The eyes of the LORD preserve him that hath knowledge, but He overthroweth the words of the faithless man.
13 The sluggard saith: 'There is a lion without; I shall be slain in the streets.'
14 The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.
15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
16 One may oppress the poor, yet will their gain increase; one may give to the rich, yet will want come.
17 Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thy heart unto my knowledge.
18 For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; let them be established altogether upon thy lips.
19 That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made them known to thee this day, even to thee.
20 Have not I written unto thee excellent things of counsels and knowledge;
21 That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, that thou mightest bring back words of truth to them that send thee?
22 Rob not the weak, because he is weak, neither crush the poor in the gate;

24 Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger; and with a wrathful man thou shalt not go;
25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.

27 If thou hast not wherewith to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

31 「王ネブカドネザルよ!全地に住むすべての民、国、諸国語の民に告げよ!

32 いと高き神が私のために行われたしるしと不思議を語ることは、私にとってよいことでした。。
33 そのしるしはいかに偉大であるか。その不思議はいかに力強いか。
その王国は永遠の王国であり、その支配は代々に及ぶ。

22 あなたは人から追い出され、あなたの住まいは野の獣となり、あなたは牛のように草を食べさせられ、天の露にぬれて、七度あなたの上を過ぎ去るでしょう。
23 また、木の根の切り株を残すように命じられましたが、天が支配することを知った後では、あなたの国はあなたにとって確かなものとなるでしょう。
24 それゆえ、王よ！私の勧告をあなたに受け入れさせ、施しによってあなたの罪を断ち、貧しい者に憐みを施してあなたの不義を断ち、もし、あなたの栄華が長くなりますように！』。」
25 このすべてのことがネブカドネザル王の上に臨みました。

32 地のすべての住民は無きに等しいとされ、天の軍勢にも、地の住民にも、御心にかなうことをされる。あなたは何をなさるのですか。
35 地に住むものはみな、無きものとみなされる。彼は、天の軍勢も、地に住むものも、みこころのままにあしらう。御手を差し押さえて、「あなたは何をされるのか」と言う者もいない。
33 同じころ、私の悟りは私に帰り、私の国の栄光のために、私の威光と輝きは私に帰り、私の大臣と領主とは私に求めた。
34 さて、私はネブカドネザルが天の王をほめたたえ、あがめ、敬う。そのすべてのわざは真理であり、その道は正義であり、高慢に歩む者を、神は卑しめることがおできになる。」
33 この言葉は、ただちにネブカデネザルの上に成就した。
彼は人間の中から追い出され、牛のように草を食べ、そのからだは天の露にぬれて、ついに、彼の髪の毛は鷲の羽のようになり、爪は鳥の爪のようになった。
34 その期間が終わった時、私、ネブカデネザルは目を上げて天を見た。
すると私に理性が戻って来た。
それで、私はいと高き方をほめたたえ、永遠に生きる方を賛美し、ほめたたえた。その主権は永遠の主権。その国は代々限りなく続く。
35 地に住むものはみな、無きものとみなされる。

36 私が理性を取り戻した時、私の王国の光栄のために、私の威光も輝きも私に戻って来た。
私の顧問も貴人も私達を迎えたので、私は王位を確立し、以前にもまして大いなる者となった。
37 今、私、ネブカデネザルは、天の王を賛美し、あがめ、ほめたたえる。
その御業はことごとく真実であり、その道は正義である。
また、高ぶって歩む者をへりくだった者とされる。

1 ネブカデネザル王が、全土に住むすべての諸民、諸国、諸国語の者たちに書き送る。あなたがたに平安が豊かにあるように。
2 いと高き神が私に行われたしるしと奇蹟とを知らせることは、私の喜びとするところである。
3 そのしるしのなんと偉大なことよ。その奇蹟のなんと力強いことよ。その国は永遠にわたる国、その主権は代々限りなく続く。
4 私、ネブカデネザルが私の家で気楽にしており、私の宮殿で栄えていたとき、
5 私は一つの夢を見たが、それが私を恐れさせた。私の寝床での様々な幻想と頭に浮かんだ幻が、私を脅かした。
6 それで、私は命令を下し、バビロンの知者をことごとく私の前に連れて来させて、その夢の解き明かしをさせようとした。

9 「呪法師の長ベルテシャツァル。私は、聖なる神の霊があなたにあり、どんな秘密もあなたにはむずかしくないことを知っている。私の見た夢の幻はこうだ。その解き明かしをしてもらいたい。
10 私の寝床で頭に浮かんだ幻、私の見た幻はこうだ。見ると、地の中央に木があった。それは非常に高かった。
11 その木は生長して強くなり、その高さは天に届いて、地の果てのどこからもそれが見えた。
12 葉は美しく、実も豊かで、それにはすべてのものの食糧があった。その下では野の獣がいこい、その枝には空の鳥が住み、すべての肉なるものはそれによって養われた。
13 私が見た幻、寝床で頭に浮かんだ幻の中に、見ると、ひとりの見張りの者、聖なる者が天から降りて来た。
14 彼は大声で叫んで、こう言った。『その木を切り倒し、枝を切り払え。その葉を振り落とし、実を投げ散らせ。獣をその下から、鳥をその枝から追い払え。
15 ただし、その根株を地に残し、これに鉄と青銅の鎖をかけて、野の若草の中に置き、天の露にぬれさせて、地の草を獣と分け合うようにせよ。
16 その心を、人間の心から変えて、獣の心にそれを与え、七つの時をその上に過ごさせよ。
17 この宣言は見張りの者たちの布告によるもの、この決定は聖なる者たちの命令によるものだ。それは、いと高き方が人間の国を支配し、これをみこころにかなう者に与え、また人間の中の最もへりくだった者をその上に立てることを、生ける者が知るためである。』
18 私、ネブカデネザル王が見た夢とはこれだ。ベルテシャツァルよ。あなたはその解き明かしを述べよ。私の国の知者たちはだれも、その解き明かしを私に知らせることができない。しかし、あなたにはできる。あなたには、聖なる神の霊があるからだ。」
19 そのとき、ベルテシャツァルと呼ばれていたダニエルは、しばらくの間、驚きすくみ、おびえた。王は話しかけて言った。「ベルテシャツァル。あなたはこの夢と解き明かしを恐れることはない。」ベルテシャツァルは答えて言った。「わが主よ。どうか、この夢があなたを憎む者たちに当てはまり、その解き明かしがあなたの敵に当てはまりますように。
20 あなたがご覧になった木、すなわち、生長して強くなり、その高さは天に届いて、地のどこからも見え、
21 その葉は美しく、実も豊かで、それにはすべてのものの食糧があり、その下に野の獣が住み、その枝に空の鳥が宿った木、
22 王さま、その木はあなたです。あなたは大きくなって強くなり、あなたの偉大さは増し加わって天に達し、あなたの主権は地の果てにまで及んでいます。
23 しかし王は、ひとりの見張りの者、聖なる者が天から降りて来てこう言うのをご覧になりました。『この木を切り倒して滅ぼせ。ただし、その根株を地に残し、これに鉄と青銅の鎖をかけて、野の若草の中に置き、天の露にぬれさせて、七つの時がその上を過ぎるまで野の獣と草を分け合うようにせよ。』
24 王さま。その解き明かしは次のとおりです。これは、いと高き方の宣言であって、わが主、王さまに起こることです。
25 あなたは人間の中から追い出され、野の獣とともに住み、牛のように草を食べ、天の露にぬれます。こうして、七つの時が過ぎ、あなたは、いと高き方が人間の国を支配し、その国をみこころにかなう者にお与えになることを知るようになります。
26 ただし、木の根株は残しておけと命じられていますから、天が支配するということをあなたが知るようになれば、あなたの国はあなたのために堅く立ちましょう。
27 それゆえ、王さま、私の勧告を快く受け入れて、正しい行いによってあなたの罪を除き、貧しい者をあわれんであなたの咎を除いてください。そうすれば、あなたの繁栄は長く続くでしょう。」
28 このことがみな、ネブカデネザル王の身に起こった。
29 十二か月の後、彼がバビロンの王の宮殿の屋上を歩いていたとき、
30 王はこう言っていた。「この大バビロンは、私の権力によって、王の家とするために、また、私の威光を輝かすために、私が建てたものではないか。」
31 このことばがまだ王の口にあるうちに、天から声があった。「ネブカデネザル王。あなたに告げる。国はあなたから取り去れた。
32 あなたは人間の中から追い出され、野の獣とともに住み、牛のように草を食べ、こうして七つの時があなたの上を過ぎ、ついに、あなたは、いと高き方が人間の国を支配し、その国をみこころにかなう者にお与えになることを知るようになる。」

31 'Nebuchadnezzar the king, unto all peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; peace be multiplied unto you.
32 It hath seemed good unto me to declare the signs and wonders that God Most High hath wrought toward me.
33 How great are His signs! and how mighty are His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and His dominion is from generation to generation.

I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace.
2 I saw a dream which made me afraid; and imaginings upon my bed and the visions of my head affrighted me.
3 Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream.
4 Then came in the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers; and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.
5 But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and I told the dream before him:
6 O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret causeth thee trouble, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof.
7 Thus were the visions of my head upon my bed: I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great.
8 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth.
9 The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was food for all; the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the branches thereof, and all flesh was fed of it.
10 I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from heaven.
11 He cried aloud, and said thus: Hew down the tree, and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit; let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from its branches.
12 Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even in a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth;
13 Let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him.
14 The matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the sentence by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He will, and setteth up over it the lowest of men.
15 This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen; and thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation; but thou art able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.'
16 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was appalled for a while, and his thoughts affrighted him. The king spoke and said: 'Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation, affright thee.' Belteshazzar answered and said: 'My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine adversaries.
17 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;
18 whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was food for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation;
19 it is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong; for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.
20 And whereas the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from heaven, and saying: Hew down the tree, and destroy it; nevertheless leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even in a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him--
21 this is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which is come upon my lord the king,
22 that thou shalt be driven from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen, and shalt be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee; till thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He will.
23 And whereas it was commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree, thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.
24 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by almsgiving, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of thy prosperity.'
25 All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar. 
26 At the end of twelve months he was walking upon the royal palace of Babylon.
27 The king spoke, and said: 'Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for a royal dwelling-place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?'
28 While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven: 'O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken: the kingdom is departed from thee.
29 And thou shalt be driven from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee; until thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He will.'
30 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar; and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair was grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.
31 'And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honoured Him that liveth for ever; for His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom from generation to generation;
32 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and He doeth according to His will in the host of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay His hand, or say unto Him: What doest Thou?
33 At the same time mine understanding returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and my splendour returned unto me; and my ministers and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and surpassing greatness was added unto me.
34 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven; for all His works are truth, and His ways justice; and those that walk in pride He is able to abase.'
