排ガス不正により訴訟や賠償に苦しむフォルクスワーゲンが30,000人にのぼる人員整理を発表しました。　日本でも燃費の不正で同様の事が起こりました。　不正はペイしないということでしょうか！

そのニュースを伝えた The Japan News の中に dieselgate と defeat deviecという二つの聞き慣れない言葉があったので調べてみました。

Volkswagen on Friday announced the biggest revamp in its history, cutting 30,000 jobs in a huge savings plan to help it recover from the dieselgate emissions cheating scandal.

ディフィートデバイス(Defeat device)とは、内燃機関を有する自動車において、有害な排出物質を試験の時だけ減らす装置を指す。

 

しかしこのあと11月30日の新聞ではトヨタと販売台数で世界1位を争っているとニュースがあり　なにか矛盾しているように思えました。

 

                                                            

Greeshoe option

積極的に企業を買収してきたソフトバンクですが財政的的に苦しいのでしょうかこのところ保持していた"Ａｌｉｂａｂａ”の株式を売却しています。　今回さらに売却すると言う事で総計 $10bil. になるそうです。

その記事の一節に次の文がありました。

Softbank said it was excercising a greenshoe option to sell more shares in Alibaba.  Softbank, which invests in telecoms and internet companies, sold more shares because of strong demand, a spokesman said.

"greeshoe option" をネットで調べてみたところ次のようにありましたが、今一つ理解できませんでしたの何時か専門家に聞いてみようかな！

グリーンシューオプション（Ｇｒｅｅｎ Shoe Option）とは、株式の増資や売出しなどの際に行われたオーバーアロットメント分について、幹事証券会社が大株主等から借り入れた株券を募集価格で株券を当該大株主から調達できる権利（オプション）のこと。

例えば10万株のオーバーアロットメントが行われた場合、その10万株を募集価格で買い戻す権利になる。仮に700円の募集価格で増資が行われた場合、市場の株価が700円より安ければ市場で調達し、逆に市場価格が700円以上の場合は、このオプション（コールオプション）を行使する。

Lausanne, Switzerland(AP) - Rome's mayor is promoting the use of existing venues in the city's bid for the 2024 Olympics.

 Ignacio Marino took part in a daylong seminar at IOC headquarters Thursday as part of the new invitation phase for potential host cities.

 Rome is planning to incorporate many of the facilities that were used for the 1960 Games in the Italian capital, including the Benito Mussolini-inspired Foro Italico complex that contains the Olympic Stadium, plus swimming and tennis venues.

 Another area of venues is slated for the half-built Tor Vergata complex on the outskirt of the city.  Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the Tor Vergata complex was meant to host events for the 2009 swimming world championship – before the entire event was moved to the Foro Italic.

MINSK(AP) – Chinese president Xi Jinping traveled Sunday to Belarus for a three-day trip to sign deal worth billions dollars as Bejing looks to build greater inroads into Europe’s economy.

  Xi said Sunday that Belarus could become a key hub for China’s much vaunted Silk Road vision – a project to bridge Europe and Asia through a series of transportation and energy links.  Chinese officials estimated the total value of the Belarus deal at a5.7 billion.

  Belarus’s economy is very reliant on Russia where growth has been suffocated by falling oil prices and Western sanctions for Russian actions in Ukraine.  That has pushed Belarus try to vary its economic relations, although its options with western Europe remain constrained by diplomatic tensions.

ミンスク(AP) - 中国の国家主習近平は中国がヨーロッパ経済に大きく進出しようとする中、数十億ドルの契約を結ぶ為に日曜日に3日間の予定でベラルーシへ旅立った

　習はベラルーシは中国誇るシルクロード構想の重要拠点になりうると日曜日に語った。　シルクロード構想とは一連の輸送およびエネルギー経路を通してヨーロッパとアジアを橋渡しをしようとするものである。

　ベラルーシ経済はロシアに大きく頼っているが、そのロシアに於いては原油価格の下落とウクライナに於けるロシアの介入に対する西側諸国の制裁により経済成長が妨げられている。

　そのためベラルーシがロシア以外の国と経済関係を持とうとしているのである。　しかし西ヨーロッパと経済関係を持つと言う選択は外交的緊張から選択肢から外されたままである。

NEW YORK (AP) – Starbuck says its workers can now have four years tuition covered for on line college degree from Arizona State University instead of just two, marking the latest sign that companies are rethinking the treatment of low wage workers.

 The Seattle-based coffee chain says the decision is part of its commitment to “redefine the role and responsibility of a public company.”

 The expansion of the program comes as employers increasingly seek to win favor with customers by cultivating their images for being socially responsible.  Last week, MacDonald’s also announced it was expanding a college tuition assistance program to workers at its more than 14,300 U.S stores.  At its company-owned stores, MacDonald’s said workers would get a pay bump and be able to earn paid time off as well.

ニューヨーク(AP) – スターバックスは従業員がアリゾナ州立大学のオンライン学位を習得する時の授業料支援を従来の2年から4年に延ばすと発表した。　これは近年会社が低賃金の社員に対する処遇を改善しようとしている現れである。

  The cut officially will not be made until Saturday because of a rain delay of nearly four hours, though he knew the score.  And he wasn’t happy about it.

  “I don’t like missing cuts,” McIlroy said.  “You want to be playing on the weekend, and I’m not there.  I’m not going to be playing this weekend, which is not nice

ロリー　マキロイの5カ月ぶりのPGAツアーの試合はわずか2日で終わった。ホンダクラッシックの2日目の金曜日に彼のマスターズへの道筋は車のスピードを落とすための段差にぶつかったようなものだった。　その日世界No.1プレイヤーは雨の中でバーディーひとつをやっと取り、フェアウェイにひどくつまずき、4オーバー74で終わった。　これでほぼ1年ぶりの2日間続けてのオーバーパーとなり、週末を家で過ごすため家路についたのである。

　雨によるほぼ4時間の遅れから正式な予選通過ラインは土曜日まで発表されないが　彼は予選通過のためのスコアーは分かっていた。　そして彼は自分が予選通過しない事には不満足であった。

　“予選落ちしたくないし、誰だって週末に決勝ラウンドをプレイしたいが自分はそこにいない。　今週末プレイする事は無いだろうし、その事は残念である”とマキロイは語った。

HAVANA  - When Cuba was hit with rolling blackouts a decade ago, Fidel Castro decided to save energy by ordering everyone on the island to switch from incandescent to fluorescent lighting.  Millions perhaps billions, of bulbs were ordered from China, and teams of students were dispatched to enter every home and business and make the switch.

  It was former high-level government official said, “a typical Fidel thing.”

  The grand gesture as a way of addressing economic crises, from the mass mobilization to harvest sugar in 1970 to the attempt to replace every light bulb in the country 35 years later, has disappeared under Cuba’s current leader, Fidel Castro’s brother Raul.

  “What most people want now is prosperity that can be sustained,” said the former official, who did not want to be identified so he could speak candidly.

Grexit

ギリシャに対する欧州連合（ＥＵ）などの支援交渉が土壇場を迎えています。ユーロ圏１９カ国が１６日開いた財務相会合は、厳しい緊縮策を伴う現行支援策の全面見直しを訴えるギリシャと、継続を求めるＥＵ側の溝が埋まらず、１１日に続いて物別れに終わりました。

The Japan Newsの関連記事に'Grexit'という言葉がありました。　何となく予想できる造語ですが調べてみました。

That is why investors grew increasingly concerned Monday that a deal may not emerge in time to avoid a so-called “Grexit” from the euro — the main stock market in Greece fell 3.8 percent while the euro slipped.

Investors are worried that the two sides are poles apart especially as a cornerstone of the election campaign of Greece’s new left-wing government was to scrap the bailout program. eleventh-hourつて？　以前にも目にした事があったのですがやりすごしていました。　今回目にしたのは次の文章の中です。

Behind the scenes, Amman held eleventh-hour negotiations on a hostage swap with the group, but evidently those attempts ended unsuccessfully.

辞書で調べてみると：

If someone does something at the eleventh hour, they do it at the last possible moment.

なるほどと納得した次第です。
