「武器よさらば」
「武器よさらば」は、アメリカの作家ヘミングウェイの長編小説である。彼が第一次世界大戦のイタリア戦線に従軍記者として取材した時の経験をもとに書いたとの事である。
彼が小説「武器よさらば」に託した思いは、「第一次世界大戦の終了」の祝福だと思われる。
大戦は終了したが、アメリカ国内は未だに武器に溢れているようだ。銃撃事件が多発しているが、その度に銃規制の世論が盛り上がるが、銃の所持がアメリカ憲法で保障されており、また、銃規制に反対する人も多いと言う。
国内で銃が無くなれば、ギャングでもない限り銃は必要が無くなる筈であり、安心して生活を楽しめる筈なのだが、そのように進展していかない。
アメリカの半数近くの人達が、政府や警察の治安能力を信じる事が出来ないからか、自分の身は自分で守るという生活スタイルが浸透しているからなのだろうか？
日本は、豊臣秀吉が四百数十年前に行った「刀狩り」で、庶民は武器を所持しない事が当たり前になっている。日本が欧米に誇ってよい事だと思う。

"A Farewell to Arms" is a novel by American writer Hemingway. It is said that he wrote it based on his experience when he covered the Italian front during World War I as a war correspondent.
The thought he entrusted to his novel "A Farewell to Arms" seems to be a celebration of "the end of the First World War."
The war is over, but America still seems to be rife with weapons. Each time there have been a number of shooting incidents, and there has been a surge in public opinion on gun control, many people insist that the possession of guns is guaranteed by the American Constitution, and many people are against gun control.
If guns disappear in the country, there should be no need for guns unless they are gangsters, and they should be able to enjoy their lives with peace of mind, but that is not how things will progress.
Is it because nearly half of the people in America cannot trust the public peace capabilities of the government and the police, or is it because the lifestyle of protecting oneself by oneself is pervasive?
In Japan, Hideyoshi Toyotomi did "sword hunting" more than 400 years ago, and it is common for ordinary people not to own weapons. I think Japan can be proud of this for the West.
