118th U.S. Open Championship - June 14-17, 2018, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Southampton, N.Y. PLAYERS Daniel Berger, Tony Finau, 2017 U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka and 2016 U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson share the lead with 54-hole totals of 213 (+3). The last time four or more players held the 54-hole lead was at Chambers Bay in 2015. Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Brendan Grace led the field with 54-hole totals of 206 (-3). 2012 was the last time two U.S. Open winners have been tied for the lead after 54 holes. 2010 U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell and 2003 U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk were T-1 after Round 3 at Olympic. Berger, Finau, Koepka and Johnson’s 54-hole total of 213 (+3) is the first time a score over par has led the U.S. Open after Round 3 since Aaron Baddeley's 2-over-par 54-hole total of 212 in the 2007 U.S Open at Oakmont C.C. 2017 U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka is the first defending U.S. Open champion to hold the 54-hole lead since 2005 at Pinehurst R. & C.C. 2004 U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen held the outright lead after Round 3 with a 54-hole total of 205 (-5). Dustin Johnson’s Round 3 score of 77 is the highest score by a 54-hole leader since Gil Morgan’s third-round 77 in 1992 at Pebble Beach. The 54-hole leader has gone on to win the U.S. Open in 52 of 115 U.S. Open championships (first three championships held at 36 holes). Daniel Berger and Tony Finau moved up 45 spots on the leaderboard over Round 3 to finish T-1 after 54 holes. After 36 holes both Berger and Finau were T-45. When Berger finished his third round at 2:16 p.m. he was T-11. When Finau finished his third round at 2:58 p.m. he was T-12. Berger and Finau both posted scores of 66. In the history of the U.S. Open, there have been only 34 Round 3 scores of 66 or lower. If Brooks Koepka wins he will be the seventh player to win consecutive U.S. Open titles and the 21st player to win more than one U.S. Open. Amateur Matt Parziale is the low amateur in the field after 54 holes. His Round 3 score of 74 (+4) was better than 39 players in the field. There are three previous U.S. Open champions in the top-5, and four previous U.S. Open champions in the top-10. He made a 10 on the hole. Finishing Round 3 with an 81, this is Mickelson’s highest score for single round of the U.S. Open (103 rounds). COURSE No. 2 and No. 3 continue to be the two most difficult consecutive holes in U.S. Open history. Through 54-holes at Shinnecock they are a combined 1.10 strokes over par. No. 2 and No. 3 have yielded only 24 birdies (11 and 13 respectively) over three rounds. The next highest scoring for two consecutive holes, measured over four rounds, was at Pebble Beach G.L. in 2000 where No. 8 and No. 9 were a combined 1.08 strokes over par. The Round 3 scoring average of 75.328 is the highest for Round 3 since 2000 at Pebble Beach (77.07). Through 54 holes, there have been 21 rounds under par. This is the fewest cumulative rounds under par since the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion (17). In Round 3, there were 62 rounds over par, the most in any Round 3 or Round 4 since Round 3 in 2013 at Merion (62). Today, 1931 Shinnecock Hills architect William Flynn’s original tee for Hole No. 7 was used for the first time in any U.S. Open at Shinnecock. The tee was part of Flynn’s original plan for the course but was never prepared for play until Shinnecock’s recent historic restoration. The par-3 No. 7 played 184 yards today and yielded a scoring average of 3.254 in Round 3. Kiradech Aphibarnrat hit 100% of the fairways (14/14) in Round 3. Aphibarnrat, along with Tony Finau and Gary Woodland, also led the field in Greens in Regulation in Round 3, hitting 83.33% (15/18) greens.
