Second-seed Nicole Vaidisova claimed her first Japan Open title Sunday after third-seed Tatiana Golovin of France was forced to retire in the women's singles final due to an Achilles tendon injury.
The 16-year-old Vaidisova, ranked 21st in the world, took a commanding lead in the first set, only to see her 25th-ranked opponent battle back to force a tiebreaker before Golovin limped off center court during the second set at Ariake Tennis Forest Park. Vaidisova was leading 7-6 (7-4), 3-2 when the match ended.
"I asked Tatiana how she was doing and she couldn't continue. I feel sorry because we really wanted to play the final till the end. I hope she gets better," Vaidisova said after the match.
"I thought she was moving really well and I didn't notice any problem. She was retrieving balls that most girls couldn't get," added Vaidisova, who won her fourth career title and first at a Tier III event.
Vaidisova is on a 10-match winning streak and won her second straight title after claiming victory in Seoul last week without dropping a set. She has been compared in many respects to world No. 1 Maria Sharapova, who won the Tokyo meet in her breakthrough season in 2004.
"It's definitely been my dream to win a grand slam and have the No. 1 ranking since I was 5 years old," Vaidisova said. "It's not something you can plan for, but it is my ultimate goal."
The 17-year-old Golovin, who also lost to Vaidisova in the second round at the Japan Open last year, took an injury timeout with the Czech leading 3-1 in the second set and held serve to win the fifth game thanks to her opponent's unforced errors.
"I was ready to play today so I'm sad I had to retire. I was trying not to give her angles and hit at her body and keep the ball deep," said Golovin, who is suffering from a left Achilles tendon injury she sustained at the U.S. Open.
"I've had the problem and three days ago it got worse. I thought it was getting better, but when I woke up this morning I felt a lot of pain. I called the trainer over but I was really unable to stand on it. I'm sad and I hope it gets better soon," she said.

Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova won the Japan Open on Sunday after France's Tatiana Golovin was forced to retire with a leg injury in the second set.
The victory was second seed Vaidisova's biggest title to date and her fourth overall. It was also her second in successive weeks having won in Seoul last week.
The Czech was leading the match 7-6 3-2 when a limping Golovin called it quits in Tokyo.
"I played a pretty good match but I feel really sorry we couldn't finish it," Vaidisova said. "I'm sad for Tatiana.
"The first set was really tight, so I was hoping it would turn into a good match with a good finish, but it didn't turn out that way."
The match was the eighth youngest final in the Open era with the 16-year-old Vaidisova against the 17-year-old from France.
Third seed Golovin took a medical timeout for an Achilles problem after going down 3-1 in the second set and stopped three points into the sixth game.
"After the last few matches I've been waking up with a lot of pain," Golovin said.
"Today I really had no choice (but to stop)."
