On October 7, 2023, people across southern Israel woke up to the sound of sirens.

A barrage of rockets was being fired at their communities
from nearby Gaza, an Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Fighters then breached the fences between Gaza and Israel.

Human Rights Watch found that at least five Palestinian armed groups took part in the attacks.

They were led by the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas,
the main political movement in Gaza.

Kibbutz Nir Oz, in Israel, was one of the places where
Palestinian armed groups launched an attack on civilians.

They went from house to house, killing at least 38 civilians and kidnapping seventy-five others.

The attackers targeted at least 24 kibbutzim and other cooperative communities,
the cities of Sderot and Ofakim, two music festivals, and a beach party.

Over 1,000 people were killed, mostly civilians,
and 251 people were taken hostage during the attacks in Israel.

The crimes included the killing of civilians, hostage-taking,
acts of sexual and gender-based violence, and looting.

Since then, Israel has used starvation as a weapon of war
and conducted unlawful attacks in Gaza,
where the population is experiencing ongoing atrocities.

International law prohibits warring parties from deliberately harming civilians.

My grandmother is 85 years old.
おバーチャンは85歳でした。
Her name is Yaffa Adar, and she’s an amazing woman.
名前はヤファ・アダルといって、とても素晴らしい女性です。
I immediately sent her a message saying, “good God, be careful, be careful”.
私はすぐ、「なんてこと！気を付けて！」ってメッセージを送りました。
She managed to read that text, because there were two blue check marks on WhatsApp,
but the messages that we sent after, she didn’t see.
ワッツアップに青のチェックマークがつきましたから、おバーチャンは読めたみたいでしたが
その後に送ったメッセージは見ていません。
That was the last contact we had with Grandmother.
おバーチャンと連絡が取れたのはそれが最後でした。

As fighters killed civilians and took others hostage at Kibbutz Nir Oz,
similar scenes were unfolding elsewhere.
戦闘員がニルオズ・キブツで、民間人を殺し、人質に取った後

The hours went by. We managed to stay
in touch somewhat with all the other members of our family,
get shreds of information about where they were and what they were doing,
but we heard nothing from my grandmother.
何時間かが過ぎ、他の家族全員と連絡を取り合うことがなんとか出来、
何処に居るのか、何をしているのかについての情報を少し知りましたが
おバーチャンからは何の連絡もありませんでした。
She didn’t answer our calls. She didn’t respond to text messages.
私たちの電話には出ませんでしたし、携帯メールにも応えませんでした。
And in the afternoon, when the army finally made it,
they went door to door, to check on people, free them,
and they got to my grandmother’s house, and they opened it,
and they saw the whole house in ruins, but my grandmother wasn’t there.
午後になって、陸軍がやっと現地入りし、一軒ずつ訪問して、人々を確認し、逃がしました。
おバーチャンの家にも行って、玄関の戸を開けたのですが、
そこで見たのは無茶苦茶になった家だけで、おバーチャンは居なかったんです。

Eight-five-year-old Yaffa Adar had been kidnapped by a Palestinian armed group.
85歳のヤファ・アダルさんは、パレスチナ人武装組織によって拉致されていた。
She was taken into Gaza on her golf cart and held hostage for over six weeks.
ゴルフ・カートに乗せられてガザに連行され、6週間人質に取られたのだ。
Eleven of Yaffa’s family members were living in Kibbutz Nir Oz at the time of the attack.
ヤファさんの家族11人が、襲撃を受けた時にニルオズ・キブツで住んでいた。
Her grandson Tamir Adar, who was a member of the kibbutz’s rapid response team,
was killed while defending it from attackers.
ヤファさんのお孫さんタミル・アダルはキブツの即応班のメンバーで、
襲撃者からキブツを守っている際に殺されている。
Yaffa was released on November 24, 2023.
ヤファさんは2023年11月24日に解放された。
She spent four days in hospital before being discharged to her family.
Many other civilians remain hostage in Gaza.
4日間入院した後に家族の元に戻ったが、
まだ多数の民間人がガザで人質に取られたままだ。
The killing of civilians and taking of hostages were part of a widespread and systematic attack on the civilian population, and amount to crimes against humanity.
民間人を殺し人質にとることは、民間人住民への広範かつ組織的な攻撃の一部であり、
人道に対する罪になる。
