1942年英国でデビュー。その後 1958 年にフランスに招かれ、そこで、ヨーロッパでの評価を得る。当時は、英仏の両方を活動の拠点にしていた。その後、1964 年に「恋のダウンタウン (Downtown)」で全米進出。イギリス人女性として初めてのビルボード No.1 を獲得。
