フレディー・コールは、あのナット・キング・コールの12歳年下の実弟。兄の存命中はそのビッグネームの影にすっかりかくれていたが、最近になってやっと注目を集め表舞台に立つようになったという。
以前、マサコのご主人ポールからフレディーのCD“Because of You”を借りて聴かせてもらったことがあり、甘～い兄の声を少し荒くしたようなそのブルージーな声はかなり私好みだった。男性のヴォーカリストでは、久々のヒットだった。
“Because of You”そしてタイミングよく、SFJAZZにフレディーが来るというので喜びいさんでボランティアに申し込んだのだった。運悪くボランティアには漏れてしまったけれど、実はその日昼間のライブ（Madeline Eastman：vocals /Randy Porter:piano /John Wiitala:bass /Vince Lateano:drums)の仕事が入っていたので、だめもとでそのまま次のライブも居座らせてもらったという次第。
おかげで、２階バルコニー最前列かぶりつきで堪能させてもらった。多謝。
一言でライブの感想を言うと、「さすがの貫禄勝ち」。
巨体を揺らしながら舞台に現れた瞬間から、もう世界が違う。ピアノに座るか座らないか、その瞬間にバーンと弾き始める。その音の心地よさと声のハリときたら！見る側をいやおうなしにグルーブさせてしまう。かっこよすぎ。
そしてそれに絡むのが、サックスの大御所、ヒューストン・パーソン。
あくまでフレディーをたてながらも、要所要所でこれぞという音色をきかせてくれる。これぞプロ中のプロという演奏だった。
曲の構成もさまざまで、ブルースからスタンダードJAZZ、そして最後はボサノバ（黒いオルフェ）まで。何を歌ってもそこにはフレディーの詩の世界が広がっていた。
フレディー、75歳。ヒューストン、74歳。
アメリカではきっとこのあたりを“熟年”と呼ぶのだろう。

Grammy-nominated pianist and singer Freddy Cole has been performing internationally for over 40 years, yet it is only recently that his star has risen here in his home country. A graduate of Juilliard and the New England Conservatory of Music, Cole boasts a refined, bluesy piano technique and a smoke-tinged voice. Though his older brother, Nat "King" Cole, casts a long shadow over his (and every jazz singer's) career, the youngest Cole, using the same band format as his brother (a piano trio featuring guitar and bass), has emerged with his own distinctive sound. People Magazine praised Cole's "gorgeous autumnal baritone, expressive phrasing and pitch-perfect feel for jazz standards, pop tunes and love ballads." And he's got a sense of humor to boot, as displayed on his song "I'm Not My Brother, I'm Me" from the album of the same name:
"I'm here to entertain you in my own special way/Hey, if Nat sounds like me, well, what can I say?"
His latest recording, Because of You (featuring tonight’s guest, legendary saxophonist Houston Person), is another winning set of standards that reinforces Cole's standing as one of the preeminent stylists working today.
