If you've done a good job of identifying innovation growth paths, you'll be led to some obvious technology trends and sources of ideas for your market. Less obvious, but just as important, will be identifying where to look for the 'non-tradtional' sources of ideas for your products and categories.

Leverage non-traditional approaches to identify unmet needs
Innovative solutions often require innovative approaches. One important and fruitful approach we've used and seen used successfully is observational research and contextual inquiry.


Create a network of resources to find enabling technologies and solutions
Regardless of how much technology roadmapping or scenario planning you and your internal teams may undertake, you'll find it extremely difficult to track the right developments and track them at the level needed to understand when they're becoming important. This is why you need to create a 'feeder network' of companies and resources that are already in each of these areas and put in place mechanisms for these external resources to be your eyes and ears into each specific arena. If you can develop the relationships with them, these entrepreneurs and start-ups can provide highly valuable 'inside out' content knowledge and keep you from needing to be the expert in every potential field of endeavor.


Exploit the intersections of needs, technologies and market opportunities
Innovation comes from these intersections, whether need-driven or technology-driven initially. Your job is to continuously search for and then exploit them in your market. Rather than wait for serendipity, be proactive in finding these intersections.
