RanestRane Concert Review

12 December 2015, Casa di Alex (Milano)

On 12 December 2015, I was lucky enough to attend the gig of RanestRane who were about to finish their final leg of the new album H.A.L. tour.

The last time I saw and heard RanestRane play live was in 2013 in Japan. They came to play in Japan to support the legendary Enzo Vita of Il Rovescio della Medaglia. I knew already that they were renowned for their high aspiration of music with technical skills, but the ‘cine concerto’ was quite new to me. In Japan, they played ‘Contaminazione’ in entirety with much ease. I remember Daniele Pomo (lead vocal, drums, perc) saying that ‘RanestRane songs are much more complicated.’ So my imagination grew to anticipation of ‘how technical will be the RanestRane live performance?’.

The band have been touring some European countries since the end of October and was about to close the tour with this Milano gig. Some several days earlier, they did a gig near Verona. It was obvious that more audience came to see the gig in Milano. Fans from other European countries came to see the show. The solid fan base of Marillion nicely supports RanestRane, who actually played with the Marillion members in the past few years. Very positive interaction among such fans was noted.

Many prog fans and musicians around Milano also came to see the show, which proved a sign of high interest in the band and also showed the popularity of Marillion family bands and musicians. Riccardo Romano (keyboards, vocal) has joined the Steve Rothery Band as the permanent member for some years. RanestRane also played live with other Marillion musicians, and no wonder their presence on stage was incredibly increased. Obviously the band made a big progress as a unit spiritually and musically by touring with these prestigious musicians.

The first half of the show was played from H.A.L. This album is more strong rock-oriented compared to the previous Monolith. The gradual rising of the tension in the music made me anticipate of the big climax. Daniele sang and played the drums skillfully, if this could be the right expression. I immediately noticed his respect to the great Phil Collins’ style. Playing complex rhythm and sing along perfectly. At times, he concentrated in singing. His voice is the soft and velvety one that many of the Italian prog fans in Japan adore.

Maurizio Meo (Electric bass and contrabass) gave diversity to the sound by using two types of basses. His bass sound overall this time was more aggressive than what I heard in the previous album. A nice contrast was heard between the sensitive fraction of the drums and the dynamic distorted bass sound. Besides RanestRane, Maurizio played in the Dire Straits Europe member and highly respected for his career.

The excited discovery was the guitar player Massimo Pomo whose presence has tripled on stage than I saw him play in Japan. In the album, the guitar part well blended into the ensemble. However as played live, it was full of emotional solos and edgy shredding.

The romantic and emotional keyboards played by Riccardo Romano should be one of the must-to-see of the RanestRane live. His passion arisen from the live music was the one you should experience the live gig.

The highlight of H.A.L. was ‘Computer Malfunction’. This track was really played with much tension, and I felt I was in breathless suspense. The tension of the screen and music perfectly blended into unity.

Following a 20 minutes intermission the second part of the show commenced from some music from Shining. Due to the nature of the original film, the tracks of Shining sound much thrilling and tense. My previous notion of ‘cine concerto completely went away when I saw the synchronization of the film and the music.  The scene where the husband smacked an axe onto the door perfectly matched with the music. What impressed me was the sequence of the music thereafter. ‘Cine concerto’ was much more complexed than what I imagined. In my amateur opinion, I felt tracks of Shining required more skills to perform than the Space Odyssey series. Also the musicians’ were highly concentrated at this moment.

While the band played songs from the Shining, they made me feel as if four actors were acting right there on the stage with the image on the screen. They were blended so well into the movie. This is what I thought the biggest excitement of the ‘cine concerto’, that this band has been trying to pursue over the years, in a very successful manner. Probably the experience of live performance with Shining led to the arrangement of the Space Odyssey music, in consideration of more  suited to live performance. (Hope I’m right…) In this concern, Space Odyssey is now the BEST style of live performance of RanestRane.

Six tracks from the first album Nosferatu were played. In hindsight, I felt the synchronization of the sound and image was much basic than Shining. At the time of Nosferatu, the music had more tendency to that of the sound track. (Hope I’m right…)

Personally I prefer the songs from Nosferatu, as they are terrifically beautiful. Particularly, ‘Via da Wismar’ always brings me to tears with the emotional melody. I read in the band’s Facebook posting that some days ago that they really visited the town considered to be ‘Wismar’; no wonder the emotion risen from the performance was so convincing. Each time I hear RanestRane sing in Italian, I am proud of myself that I have supported this band. Their strong belief of singing in Italian lyrics should be maintained.

I prefer the literature concept such as Nosferatu, but imaged it difficult to give dynamism in terms of sound. (Who knows RanestRane may make another album based on some literature!?)

Two songs were played at the encore. Oh, was it already the end of the show? After all, I was happy to hear my favorite Nosferatu and Shining played live. Nosferatu is still the main part of RanestRane’s charm to me.

The performance was simply outstanding in terms of technique and presentation, and no wonder the band is gaining greater support globally. I hope they have some opportunity to come back to play live performance in the near future. The Japanese prog community MUST experience this grandiose emotion.
