インド洋に浮かぶ豪州領クリスマス島は人口1500人の絶海の孤島。辺鄙なこの島が脚光を浴びるのはヤシガニとアカガニの生息地だから。誰が数えたのか、そのアカガニの数は1億2000万匹とか。山奥の熱帯雨林に住むアカガニは12月に大挙して海に移動して、新月の夜に産卵。孵化した小ガニは4週間後に一斉に山に戻ります。大移動で島中がカニで埋め尽くされ、足の踏み場もなくなるそうです。この島へ行くべきか、行かざるべきか思案中です。

Australian territorial Christmas Island that locates in the Indian Ocean is a solitary island in the ocean with the population of 1,500. The reason why this unfrequented island is spotlighted is that coconut crabs and red crabs inhabit there. I have no idea who has counted it but it is said there are 120,000,000 of red crabs. Red crabs usually live in the back of tropical rain forests and they move to the sea in a great mass to lay eggs at new moon night. The hatched infant crabs concurrently return the mountain 4 weeks after. The great migration fills up the ground of the island and people hardly can walk. I’ve been wondering whether I should visit this island or not.
