Exclusive interview with Michael Ballack, part 2
Webteam: How do you stay in touch with home? For instance, do you use the internet more often than before because you want to learn about what's going on in Germany?
ドイツ関連の情報は、どう入手していますか？例えば、以前にも増してインターネットを利用しているとか？ドイツ国内では何が起こっているのかを知りたいですよね。
Michael Ballack: Not more often than before, no. We can watch German television and buy German newspapers. What might happen is that I can't find a particular paper, then I'll read this edition online.
以前にも増して、ということはないですね。こちらでドイツのテレビ放送がありますし、ドイツの新聞だって買えます。ロンドンで買えないような新聞は、ネットで読みます。
And what about your own homepage?
あなた自身のホームページは、いかがですか？
Oh, I visit that a couple of times per week. After all, I want to know what people are thinking. It's always exciting to read the forum or the guestbook. Sometimes there's criticism voiced, which I think is good, actually, because everyone is entitled to an opinion and should make it heard. And then others will take the floor and defend me. I think that's very interesting.
週に数回は覗きますよ。人々がどう思っているのかを知りたいですから。フォーラムやゲストブックを読むのは、いつも楽しいです。時々、批判の声も聞かれますが、有難いことです。つまり、誰もが自分の意見を述べる権利がありますし、批判の声を上げられるようにすべきです。そうすると別の人が発言を始めて、私を擁護してくれます。これは、実に興味深いですよ。
On the occasion of your comeback you said that the encouraging postings in the guestbook were a great help.
怪我から復帰した時にこう言ってましたね。『ゲストブックの励ましの書き込みが大きな励みになった』と。
That really gave me additional motivation. After all, the support of the fans is particularly important during difficult times. It's good to realise that people don't forget you even when you're sidelined for a longer period of time.
余計、やる気になりましたよ。つらい時期のファンからの支援は、特に大切でした。長期に渡る戦線離脱状態でも、みんなは私のことを忘れてはいないのだ、ということが、よく分かりましたから。
We've been talking only about yourself so far, but you have taken a family with you to England, and for them this was a big change. Has the family settled down now?
ここまでは、あなた自身のことばかり尋ねていましたが、ご家族にとっても、イングランドでの生活は大きな変化ですよね。ご家族の皆さんは、こちらの生活に慣れましたか？
Oh yes, my family feels very comfortable here. The two older boys, for example, go to an English school, not to a bilingual one for foreigners. My family is now at home here.
ええ、心地よく暮らしています。例えば、上の二人の息子は、外国人向けの２言語使用の学校ではなく、現地の学校に通っています。家族はすっかり、こちらの生活に慣れていますよ。
Do you still follow the tourist routine, such as going to Madame Tussauds and the Tower and so on?
まだ、お定まりの観光スポットへ行ったりしてますか？マダム・タッソーとかロンドン塔とか・・・。
We haven't yet been to the wax museum. That is, I have been there before, together with the Bayern squad. But we do go for trips and try to include the sights in the planning. For example, there are very nice restaurants near Tower Bridge, at the Thames. So you can go out to eat and at the same time see a bit of the city.
その、蝋人形館にはまだ行っていません。以前バイエルンのチームメイトとは行きましたが。でもロンドン巡りはしていますよ。そうした観光名所もプランの中に含めるようにしています。テムズ河にかかるタワーブリッジの近くに、美味しいレストランがあるんです。食事をして、市内見物も出来るんですよ。
And what about the numerous sporting events in London? To name just one, have you been to the Wimbledon tennis tournament last year?
ロンドンで行われる、数多いスポーツの催し物、例えばウィンブルドン・テニスなど、去年は行きましたか？
No, I haven't been to see the tennis in Wimbledon. I might do it this year. The last really big event which I attended was the so-called "Race of Champions" at the new Wembley Stadium, the week before christmas. That's a spectacular motorsport event which is held every year. Michael Schumacher was racing, David Coulthard and many other famous drivers.
いえ、それは見に行きませんでした。今年は行こうかな。最近行った最大のイベントといえば、ウェンブリー・スタジアムで行われた、いわゆる『チャンピオンズ・レース』です。クリスマスの1週間前でした。毎年開催される、目を見張るような自動車競技です。マイケル・シューマッハやデイビッド・コールタード、その他有名ドライバーが参加してました。
At the Wembley Stadium? Where you're going to play the Carling Cup final?

The cars weren't racing on the pitch, obviously, but on a tarmac track. When we'll be lining up there, the playing surface is going to be in a top condition.
もちろん、車はピッチ上は走りませんでしたよ！競技用走路だけです。私達がカーリング・カップ決勝戦でそこのピッチ上に整列する時には、グラウンドは最高の状態になっている筈です。
