Q. I have an issue with my weight. I have been working so hard, but just not seeing the results I want to see. I know patience is important and maybe I just need to wait, but how long? How long do I need to wait? I know that one day God will deliver me from this situation, and I have been praying so hard, but when will he answer my prayer? I am getting impatient. What else do I need to know to reach my desired goal?
A. Very true. It's not easy to live in this shell of ours that cause us to be unhealthy. Carrying on so much weight means that it affect almost every organ of our body. Knees to begin with. the knees can no longer take so much weight and it starts to wear out. Every day that cartridge start to wear our one day and another day, more and more. We don't like how we look when we are overweight. It's terrible to see ourselves in the mirror and tell ourselves how ugly we look. No clothes really fits and you end up wearing all those baggy clothes that has elastics to your waist. I agree, we want to lose weight not just to look good and to gain back our self-esteem, but more so for our health, because our health matters.
Let me ask you, what is your goal? Is your goal simply to lose weight? or is it more like gaining back your health, say you have pain in your knee joints, or you feel like you are dragging yourself each day because you feel heavy and tired? I believe the more the goal is close to survival and a need rather than wants, the more you are likely to achieve.
so 1. set your goal - let's say I want to be free from this knee pain. and of course I would suggest that you come up with some sub goals such as to be able to fit in a clothes you want, or to gain back your self-esteem and confidence that will come from looking good.
2. start small - I would suggest that you start small, meaning something that you can do today. You cannot climb Mt. Rainier over night, unless the helicopter drops you off at the summit. You start your climb one step forward first. that's what we call the first step. everything starts with the first step, so as long as you can move that first step, you have made the start. So let's say you make a meal plan. You meet your meal plan for breakfast first. then onto your lunch, and so forth. you did it one day, celebrate and give yourself hi-five for that achievement. it always starts with the first step.
3. consistency - making it as a habit - now that you know you were able to achieve that first step, you go on to the next step, but you are still keeping that first step, you are just adding the next step on top of the first, and then to the third, and one day becomes a week, then a month, then before you know it, it's years of habit you have created. Yes, habits are to align with consistency. Consistency is a habit. Do you remember to lock your door every time you step outside the door? Yes. You made that habit, and isn't it consistent? Why? because you have the goal, the motivation, that you want to protect your possessions. Let your deeds become auto-pilot.
4. do your part - yes. we all know that God governs our destiny and our life, however, I always feel that God also expects us to do our part. I do not believe you can pray and just lay back on your couch and expect God to do miracles overnight. Yes, I know some people experience that break through or miracles, but most of the time, they even were doing their part, I believe and we just hear the results? People don't see what went behind those crucial years building up to that final moment of breakthrough. So yes, keep praying, I certainly encourage you to do so, because God does want to hear our wishes and desires, but DO YOUR PART. What are you actually doing to reach that goal, to achieve that dream? You just have to do your part. Again, start small where you can start, be realistic, and it's that realistic action that you consistently work towards that will reach your destiny.
5. Believe in yourself - Last but not least, believe in yourself. believe that your goal is achievable, and one day you will make it to that goal. Remove any obstacles or any negative thoughts that may come your way. Just push those off, especially what others say about your goal. You need people who encourage you, not the nay sayers. but most of all, you are with yourself all the time, so what you say is most important. tell yourself that you can do this. it's not hard, it's a matter of keeping that consistency, and making sure you have that momentum that keeps you going. nothing is impossible. you put your mind on it, and it will happen. vision yourself, the healthier and skinnier you. It will come, never give up.
Hope some of these tips will help you, to motivate yourself towards your goal.
If you need personal guidance, I will be happy to guide you through your journey.
