元海上自衛隊の医師で、日本人１２人目の宇宙飛行士となる金井宣茂さんが乗り組むロシアの宇宙船「ソユーズ」が、日本時間の午後４時２１分、中央アジアのカザフスタンから打ち上げられます。
カザフスタンのバイコヌール宇宙基地から国際宇宙ステーションに向かう日本人１２人目の宇宙飛行士、金井宣茂さんは、日本時間の１７日午前１０時半ごろ、一緒に宇宙船に乗り組むロシア人とアメリカ人の宇宙飛行士とともに滞在先のホテルからバスで宇宙基地に移動しました。
金井さんらは、このあと宇宙服に着替え、日本時間の午後２時ごろ宇宙船に乗り組むことになっています。
打ち上げは午後４時２１分の予定で、打ち上げの成否は午後４時半ごろ判明する見通しです。
国際宇宙ステーションには日本時間の１９日の夕方到着する予定で、来年の６月の初めまでおよそ半年間の長期滞在に臨みます。
長期滞在中、金井さんはアルツハイマー病などのメカニズムの解明のためたんぱく質の結晶を作ったり、一般の人が宇宙に行く時代に備え、無重力や放射線などの宇宙環境が人体に与える影響を調べたりする実験を担当する予定です。
