一方で、今後の中国との関係について蔡総統は、「現状維持」という従来の立場を変えないとし、中国の習近平国家主席については、「理性的な政策決定者だと信じている。台湾への武力行使の可能性は政策決定の際に考慮されていないはずだ」と述べて、台湾に強硬な路線をとらないよう促しました。
独立志向が強いとされる民進党による政権を率いる蔡総統の下ではこの１年半、中国との当局どうしの対話が途絶えたままです。ただ、一時は落ち込んでいた中国からの観光客は回復傾向にあり、現状維持の姿勢を強調した背景には、足元の民進党支持者の間でも、中国との決定的な対立は望まない意見が根強いことに配慮したものと見られます
