1971年の"The Americana Annual"に記載されたジョージ・セルの訃報

某図書館で、たまたま1971年の "The Americana Annual" を見つけました。これは、"An Encyclopedia of the Events of 1970" というもので、エンサイクロペディア・アメリカーナのイヤーブックになっているようです。このp.485にMusicという項目があり、Robert S. Clark という associate editor ("Stereo Review")が、4ページにわたって執筆しています。



この中で、Orchestra という項目の冒頭に、

George Szell, musical director of the Cleveland Orchestra, died in the summer of 1970 (see Szell, George). Its principal guest conductor, Pierre Boulez, who is to assume the musical directorship of the New York Philharmonic in 1971, was named music advisor of the Cleveland orchestra, and Louis Lane, associate conductor, was designated resident conductor. Boulez' selection as artistic director of the Blossom Music Center, summer residence of the Cleveland Orchestra, had been announced earlier in the year.

と記しています。そして、この後はダラス交響楽団や海外の動向などに話題が移っています。



索引で Szell の項を見ると、657ページにまるまる1ページ、Robert Finn による記述がありますが、筆者は "The Plain Dealer", Cleveland という肩書きになっています。その本文では、Early Life と U.S.Carrier の二部に分けてセルのキャリアについて簡潔に整理しています。中身についてはじっくり読んでみたいと思いますが、思わぬ発見でした。
