New men on target
Tamas Hajnal and Shinji Okazaki both signed for VfB in winter, and on Saturday their goals secured the club’s top flight survival.

For Shinji Okazaki had been waiting some time for this moment, but against Hannover 96 in the final home game of the season, his wait was finally over. The Japanese international, who signed to VfB from Shimizu S-Pulse in winter, placed a low, well-placed shot into the bottom right corner to make it 2-0 – all but deciding a vitally important game.

The 25 year old had tried his luck in ten previous Bundesliga outings, but had either an opposition goalkeeper or just bad luck to deny him. Even without goals, the attacker had a major role to play in Stuttgart’s vastly improved post-Christmas form. Despite having played two years through without a break, Shinji Okazaki has proven extremely committed and willing.

Now he has finally managed to notch up his first goal for VfB Stuttgart: "I’m very happy about my first goal, especially as I had to wait for so long for it to come," said Okazaki after the game.
