give something a miss

私の英語の勉強の目標は英語の小説をすらすらと読めるようになる事です。MAX DANGERは比較的すらすらと読めた気がするのですが、The Great Gatsbyではまだまだ先は遠いと感じました。まだ小説よりノンフィクションとかビジネス書を読める程度なので、しばらく小説はお預けにしようと思いました。しかし、先日NHKで英国在住のKazuo Ishiguroを紹介する番組を見かけて（途中から一部を見ただけですが）、氏の小説をその内に是非読みたいと思いました。地元の図書館に氏の小説があるか調べたら何冊かあるのが分かり読んでみることにしました。最初に読み始めたのは A PALE VIEW OF HILLS です。小説の背景も何も分からないのですが、このブログで取り上げるのは、基本的に私が興味を覚えた表現、覚えたい単語・慣用句だけなので、小説自体に興味のある方は是非自分でも読んで下さい。
主人公の夫、Jiroとその父のOgataの会話で、父が息子のJiroに訊いています。
"This school reunion of yours," he said to Jiro. "That's tonight, is it?"
"No, tomorrow evening."
"Will you be seeing Shigeo Matsuda?"
"Shigeo? No, I doubt it. He doesn't usually attend these occasions. I'm sorry to be going off and leaving you, Father. I'd rather give the thing a miss, but that may cause offence."
"give the thing a miss" の表現は初めて見ますが、"miss" の意味からして、ここでは学校の同窓会/同期会に欠席する事かなと推測しますが、辞書で確認します。
辞書には "give something a miss" で次ぎの様な説明がありました。
・Cambridge Idioms Dictionary: give something a miss (informal): to not take part in an activity I think I'll give the barbecue a miss. I'm on a diet.
・Macmillan Dictionary: mainly British informal: to decide not to do something that you usually do: I think I’ll give my art class a miss this week.
・Cambridge Dictionaries Online: UK informal to avoid or not do something: We usually go to France in the summer, but we've decided to give it a miss this year.: The restaurant's very good for fish, but I'd give their vegetarian options a miss.
主に英国で使われる慣用句なのですね。
