Zechariah 2: The Lord will take the initiative in the rebuilding
1. the third vision
The prophecies through visions continue. The third vision is of a "young man with a measuring rope in his hand. He was going to measure the city of Jerusalem. In other words, he is symbolic of those who are trying to rebuild Jerusalem. So he is called away and reveals his plans for Jerusalem. Jerusalem would soon become an even larger city than it is now, with people and livestock overflowing its walls, so large that it would no longer make sense to measure and rebuild the walls. And God, he says, will be the one to protect the city (v. 5).
The second and third visions are connected. The background of the vision is that God has destroyed Babylon and liberated the southern kingdom of Judah (second vision), and that the liberated Judah will return to Jerusalem, rebuild the city, and bring it back to life again (third vision).
2. prosperity of Jerusalem
Continuing, Zechariah calls out, v. 6, "Come, flee at once from the land of the north." Verse 7: "Flee to Zion. O ye that dwell with Babylon my daughter." He encourages the Israelites to return from Babylon to partake of the blessings promised to this Jerusalem. Since Babylon will soon be destroyed by God, he tells them to flee from it before that time. In any case, God assures them that His blessing on Jerusalem is certain: "I will dwell in your midst. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you" (v. 11).
This prophecy was first spoken to the Israelites of that time. In fact, when Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, the city was not overflowing with people but had to be forcibly relocated by lot (Nehemiah 11:1-2). In the present age, the Church of Christ has been born in Jerusalem, and from there it has overflowed and spread throughout the world. This prophecy, then, can be seen as a prophecy with an apocalyptic vision that symbolically speaks of the future of Jerusalem, even though it is directly based on the return of the Babylonian captivity.
3. the will of God
The second half of the prophecy, beginning with verse 6, can be divided into two parts: verses 6-9 and 10-13. These have the same structure, with the Word of God followed by Zechariah's commentary, respectively. The first half, however, reinforces the second vision and confirms the destruction of Babylon, while the second half reinforces the third vision and confirms the Lord's will to restore and protect Jerusalem. v. 8 "He who touches you," God says, "touches my eyes. In other words, God cannot help but feel it in his body when something happens to Israel. He would say that He senses and reacts to even the smallest event, verse 13: "For the Lord will arise from His holy habitation." God is hungry to lift up His heavy back and begin to move. God is not an idol, immovable, enshrined in the temple. He is not a blind, dumb, or deaf idol. He senses things sensitively, and He feels His loved ones when they are touched, and if there is malice in them, He does not fail to judge them. If there is malice, He cannot help judging it. And if there is distress, He is the One who must rescue people from the palace. Let us remember this living and true God as we walk. I pray that today will be another good day.
