Unit1-2 Put the verb into the correct form. Somethimes you need the negative (I'm form. Somethimes you need the negative (I'm not doing etc.

7.Paul and Sally have had an argument. They ................... to each other. (speak)
I know that answer " They're not speaking" but, Why it's not "talk"??

Ahh, LeMON wa itsumo ii shitsumon o tazuneru

You can say "talking". I have 2 answers.

1. "speaking" is a more formal word, "talking" is more casual.

For example, children do not say "speaking" often.

2. Better answer (dakedo, motto wakarinikui) - we use "speaking" to say that they are friends who talk to each other sometimes. Look at this sentence

Paul apologized to Sally. Now they are speaking to each other.

It does not mean they are talking NOW, it means they made up, they are no longer fighting. So if you argue with your husband, and your friend asks "LeMON, would you like to bring your husband to dinner with us?", you might say "I don't know, we are not speaking".

Another common English way to say it is "We are not on speaking terms".

Unit 3-1 Are the underlined verbs right or wrong? Correct them where necessary.
9.I hear you've got a new job. How do you get on?

What does "How are you getting on?" mean??  It wasn't " How did you find it?", was it?

Ooooooh, you have discovered a difference between American and British eigo yo. You will almost never hear an American say this. It means "How are you doing?" or "How is it going?". They are asking "is everything ok at the job".

There are many such differences (like differences between Osakaben and Kanto speech)

Unit7-1 Read the situations and write sentences. Use the folowing verbs:

5.Dan didn't have a beard before. Now he has a beard.
     He has grown a beard.
a beard? not his beard??

Yes, it is always difficult to know if you should say "a" "the" "his". A man always has a beard, but he shaves it ne. But we say "he does not have a beard" if he shaves it. I suppose you could say "He has grown his beard". Don't worry about this one.

Unit 8-1 You are asking people questions about things they have done. Make questions with ever using the words in branckets.

3.(run/ marathon?) Have you ever run a marathon?
a??? Can we count marathon??

Yes, good job, it is "run a marathon". Just like the beard question - we say "a" if it is not specific. Look at this sentence

Have you ever run the New York Marathon?

There are many marathons, but I am asking did you run in a specific one (New York's)

Unit8-2 Complete B's answers. Some sentences are positive and some negative. Use the following verbs.

6.A:Are you enjoying your holiday? B; I don't know . I haven't read it. (This is correct answer. but, I wrote " I've never read it. so, I made mistake.)

Hmm, wakarimasen. "Holiday" wa shukujitsu imidesu. If the question is

これは、れもンが問題を間違えたのが原因です・・・本当のAは、What's that book like?なんですねえ・・・。一つ上のAを書いてしまいまして、只今訂正を送っております。ノバで聞いたら、どんな?って聞かれてる本は、聞かれてる側の人の持ち物だから、まだ読んでないから知らないって事だから、never は使わないって言われましたが。

"Are you enjoying your book?", you can answer "I've never read it". It is ok.

7.IA:Is Brussels an interesting place? B: I've no idea. I haven't been there. or I've never been there.
Yes, it is ok to say both. It is more common to say "I've never been there"

9. A;Do you like caviar? B;I've never tried it. or I haven't tried it.(This is correct answer.)

11.A: Who's that woman by the door? B: I haven't seen her before.or I've never seen her before.
Why question 6 didn't use " never "?? Question 7,9,11  use both of them....

Hmmm, again, I think both answers are ok. Most English speakers will say "I've never...."
