It is known to the general Muslims that the month of Ramadan is the ninth month in the Hijri calendar, and it is a special month that has a special place among Muslims, as the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, on Laylat al-Qadr, one of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. People used to greet and congratulate on the occasion of this month, saying: “Ramadan Kareem.” Where did this phrase come from? Why do fasting people repeat it? What is the difference between it and other phrases said this month?

Ramadan is one of the most important months in the Islamic calendar. For Muslims, it is the month of generosity, charity, righteousness, piety, and faith. Ramadan fasting is the fourth pillar of the five pillars of Islam. It is known that the beginning and end of the month of Ramadan are determined by the Islamic lunar calendar, by investigating the crescent and visually seeing it in the sky, and it lasts either 29 or 30 days, as Muslims fast from food and drinks during the period between sunrise and sunset. During this month, Muslims congratulate each other by repeating the phrase “Ramadan Kareem,” so what is the origin of this phrase?

What is the meaning of the word Ramadan"? The word “Ramadan” is not a related word or restricted to Islam only, because it was widespread and known before Islam. It is one of the Arabic names known in the pre-Islamic era, where its origin goes back to the word “Ramad”, which means intense heat and high air temperature. The naming of the month coincided with the obligation that the Muslim performs in this holy month, as fasting makes the stomach of the Muslim dry and hot as a result of his feeling of thirst and hunger. Also, the month of Ramadan may come at a time in the summer, when it gets very hot in some countries and regions.
