　過去60年以上にわたり米国がこうした行動をとってきたのは、米国の運命が海を超えたところとつながっているからです。As we have for over sixty years, America takes these actions because our destiny is connected to those beyond our shores.　それはこれが正しい道だからです。But we also do it because it is right.
　だからこそ１万人を超える米国民はほかの多くの国とともに（大地震に見舞われた）ハイチの国民の生活復旧のために働いているのです。That is why, as we meet here tonight, over 10,000 Americans are working with many nations to help the people of Haiti recover and rebuild.
　学校に行きたいと願うアフガニスタンの少女を助け、街頭でデモ行進するイランの女性の人権問題を支援し、汚職に阻まれ職を拒否されたギニアの若者たちのために主張するのです。That is why we stand with the girl who yearns to go to school in Afghanistan; we support the human rights of the women marching through the streets of Iran; and we advocate for the young man denied a job by corruption in Guinea.

　米国は常に自由と人間の尊厳の側になければなりません。For America must always stand on the side of freedom and human dignity.　海外における米国の強さの根源は、常に私たちの理想にありました。Abroad, America’s greatest source of strength has always been our ideals.　それは国内でも同じです。The same is true at home.　私たちは合衆国憲法で保障された権利に支えられ、驚くべき多様性の中で団結しています。それは私たちが誰であろうとどんな見かけであろうと生まれながらにして平等であること、法に従えば法に守られること、そして私たちの共通の価値観に忠実であれば他の誰とも同様に扱われるということです。We find unity in our incredible diversity, drawing on the promise enshrined in our Constitution: the notion that we are all created equal, that no matter who you are or what you look like, if you abide by the law you should be protected by it; that if you adhere to our common values you should be treated no different than anyone else.　私たちは継続的にこの約束を更新しなければなりません。We must continually renew this promise.　つまるところ、米国をつくり上げたのは私たちの理想と価値なのです。世界中の移民によって国家を形成し、今なお市民に受け継がれている価値なのです。In the end, it is our ideals, our values, that built America - values that allowed us to forge a nation made up of immigrants from every corner of the globe; values that drive our citizens still.

市民の疑念 people’s doubts

　日々、米国人は自身の家庭や職業の責任を果たしています。Every day, Americans meet their responsibilities to their families and their employers.　彼らは隣人に手を差し伸べ、最終的に国家に還元します。Time and again, they lend a hand to their neighbors and give back to their country.　労働に誇りを持ち、惜しみなく活気をもたらしています。They take pride in their labor, and are generous in spirit.　これらは共和党の、または民主党の価値ではありません。ビジネスの価値や職業の価値でもありません。These aren’t Republican values or Democratic values they’re living by; business values or labor values.　それらは米国の価値なのです。They are American values.
　不幸にも、あまりにも多くの市民は大企業やメディア、政府がこれらの価値を体現していないと思うようになってしまいました。Unfortunately, too many of our citizens have lost faith that our biggest institutions - our corporations, our media, and yes, our government - still reflect these same values.　これらの組織ではすべて、尊敬すべき男女が重要な仕事をこなし、国家の繁栄に寄与しています。Each of these institutions are full of honorable men and women doing important work that helps our country prosper.　しかし、企業経営者が失敗にもかかわらず報酬を得たり、銀行家が自身の利益のために私たちにリスクを押しつけたりするたび、市民の疑念が高まります。But each time a CEO rewards himself for failure, or a banker puts the rest of us at risk for his own selfish gain, people’s doubts grow.　ロビイストが制度をもてあそび、政治家が国家を発展させる代わりにお互いを中傷し合う光景を見るたび、私たちは信頼を失いました。Each time lobbyists game the system or politicians tear each other down instead of lifting this country up, we lose faith.　テレビの批評家が真剣な議論をばかげた内容におとしめ、大事な問題を矮小化すればするほど、市民は背を向けました。The more that TV pundits reduce serious debates into silly arguments, and big issues into sound bites, our citizens turn away.　大きな不信が生まれるのは当然です。No wonder there’s so much cynicism out there.　大きな失望があることは当然です。No wonder there’s so much disappointment.

信じられる変革 change we can believe in

　私は選挙戦で変革を掲げました。「信じられる変革」というスローガンでした。I campaigned on the promise of change - change we can believe in, the slogan went.　けれども現在、変革できるかどうか、あるいは私が変革を届けられるかどうか、自信を持てない多くの国民がいることを理解しています。And right now, I know there are many Americans who aren’t sure if they still believe we can change - or at least, that I can deliver it.　しかし、思い出して欲しい。私は変革が簡単で、単独でできると主張したことはありません。But remember this - I never suggested that change would be easy, or that I can do it alone.　３億人の国家の民主主義はやかましく、ごちゃごちゃで、複雑ななものです。Democracy in a nation of three hundred million people can be noisy and messy and complicated.　大事を成し、大きな変革をなそうとすれば、情熱や議論を喚起するものなのです。And when you try to do big things and make big changes, it stirs passions and controversy. That’s just how it is.
　私たちのように公職にある者はこの現実に対応する際、安穏な道を選び、厳しい真実を伝えないこともできます。Those of us in public office can respond to this reality by playing it safe and avoid telling hard truths.　私たちは、次の世代にとって最も良いことをする代わりに、世論調査の数字を維持し、次の選挙を乗り切るために必要なことをすることもできます。We can do what’s necessary to keep our poll numbers high, and get through the next election instead of doing what’s best for the next generation.
　しかし、私はこのことも知っています。50年前、100年前、200年前に人々がそのような判断を下していたら、私たちは今夜、ここにいなかったでしょう。But I also know this: if people had made that decision fifty years ago or one hundred years ago or two hundred years ago, we wouldn’t be here tonight.　私たちがここにいられるのは、ひとえに何世代もの米国人が困難なことを恐れず、成功が不確かなときでも必要なことを実行し、子どもたちや孫たちのためにこの国の夢を持ち続けたからなのです。The only reason we are is because generations of Americans were unafraid to do what was hard; to do what was needed even when success was uncertain; to do what it took to keep the dream of this nation alive for their children and grandchildren.

取るに足らない nothing compared

　今年、我が政権はいくつかの政治的な挫折を経験し、その一部は自業自得でした。Our administration has had some political setbacks this year, and some of them were deserved.　しかし、この国の至るところで家族が直面している困難に比べれば、それが取るに足らないものであることを毎日起きるたびに思い出します。But I wake up every day knowing that they are nothing compared to the setbacks that families all across this country have faced this year.　これらの困難にもかかわらず、私たちを前進させ、戦い続けることを可能にしているのは、決意と楽観主義の精神であり、ずっと米国人の核であり続けている生来の良識が健在だからです。And what keeps me going - what keeps me fighting - is that despite all these setbacks, that spirit of determination and optimism - that fundamental decency that has always been at the core of the American people - lives on.

　その良識は「たとえ少しでも、失敗するかもしれないと考えたい人などいない」と、厳しい環境にある自らの会社について、私に手紙を書いてくれた中小企業経営者のなかにも生き続けています。It lives on in the struggling small business owner who wrote to me of his company, “None of us,” he said, “…are willing to consider, even slightly, that we might fail.”
　それは、景気後退の痛みを感じながら「私たちは強い。私たちは立ち直りが早い。私たちは米国人だ」と語った女性のなかにも生き続けています。It lives on in the woman who said that even though she and her neighbors have felt the pain of recession, “We are strong. We are resilient. We are American.”
　それは、ハイチの人々に渡してほしいと自分の小遣いを送ってくれたルイジアナ州に住む８歳の少年の中にも生き続けています。It lives on in the 8-year old boy in Louisiana, who just sent me his allowance and asked if I would give it to the people of Haiti.
　それは普段の生活をいったん止め、行ったこともないような場所に行き、見知らぬ人をがれきの中から助け出す人々の中に生き続けています。一つの命が救われたことで「ＵＳＡ」の大合唱が起きるのです。And it lives on in all the Americans who’ve dropped everything to go some place they’ve never been and pull people they’ve never known from rubble, prompting chants of “U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A!” when another life was saved.
　２世紀以上にわたり、この国を支えてきた精神はあなたや、米国人のなかに生き続けています。The spirit that has sustained this nation for more than two centuries lives on in you, its people.

　私たちは難しい１年を終えました。We have finished a difficult year.　困難な10年を経験しました。We have come through a difficult decade.　しかし、新しい年が来ました。But a new year has come.　新たな10年が私たちの前に広がっています。A new decade stretches before us.　私たちはあきらめません。We don’t quit.　私はあきらめません。I don’t quit.　再び始め、夢を前進させ、私たちの団結をいま一度強化するために、この好機を生かしましょう。Let’s seize this moment - to start anew, to carry the dream forward, and to strengthen our union once more.

菊池雄星

　昨夏の甲子園８月２３日準決勝で敗れ、最後の甲子園となった試合後のインタビューで「もうこの仲間とだったら、一生野球ができなくてもいいからと思って投げました」と、泣きじゃくっていた菊池雄星１８歳（花巻東→西武）。

　以下、テレビ朝日のインタビュー（来る１月１５日放送の報道ステーション）より

　一つひとつの練習を全力で、丁寧に取り組んでいる印象を受けます。

　練習することでしか、うまくなれません。手を抜くのは簡単ですが、そうしないように心がけています。自分に負けたら終わりです。たくさんの方々の期待も背負っていると思うので、その期待に応えたいです。

　高校の最上級生からプロの新人選手として再スタートすることで、どんな点に気を付けていますか？

　先輩と一緒の行動が多いので、扉の開け閉めは僕がやるとか。先輩に対して丁寧な言葉使いをするのは当然です。同じ方向に歩いていて、その先の扉が閉まっていれば、僕が開けるべきですから。そういう細かいことは高校時代に教わりました。

　あいさつも、立ち止まってしていますよね。

　中学でも、高校でも、「立ち止まらないあいさつは、あいさつじゃない」と教わりました。高校までに習ったことをプロに入ったらやらないというのは、それを教えてくれた方に失礼だと思います。

　ひまさえあれば本屋さんに通う読書家で知られていますが、最近はまっているのは？

　坂本竜馬が好きです。スケールの大きさとか、人を引きつける魅力とか。人を引きつけることは、ファンを引きつけることと同じだと思います。高校の佐々木監督からも、「竜馬のような人間になれ」と言われました。なかなか近づけないと思いますけれど。

　「心眼力」（野口嘉則氏のベストセラー）も愛読しているとか。心に残る言葉はありますか？

　端的な言葉ではないんですが、食事が、親が、環境がということを言い訳にしてはいけないということですね。それは、雨を晴れにしてくれと願うようなもので、それを言い訳にしていては勝てない。環境をどうとらえるかが大切だという内容が印象に残っています。

　プロとしてのトレーニングが始まり、いま、どんな点に心がけていますか？

　意識を持ってやることです。トレーニング器具がなくても、トレーニングはできます。実際に、いまのようにトレーニング器具が充実していない時代にも、素晴らしい投手はいらっしゃったわけですから。トレーニングは器具の充実や環境ではなく、自分の意識次第だと思っています。

　高校生活でやり残したことはありませんか？

　全くありません。けがをして最後に投げられなかったことは悔しいんですが（昨夏の選手権大会中に肋骨＝ろっこつ＝を疲労骨折。準決勝の中京大中京戦は先発できず）、自分がけがをして投げられないとチームにこれだけ迷惑がかかるんだということを学びました。貴重な経験だと思っています。

　すごく謙虚で、しっかりした考えを持っているなという印象を受けます。そういう考え方や姿勢が生まれたきっかけを教えてください。

　負けの中から学んできたと思っています。中学時代も、高校１、２年のときも、ほとんど勝てませんでした。順風満帆の野球人生だったら、力で投げるだけの投手だったと思います。

　プロ１年目の目標は？

　１年目は、結果以上に課題を見つけることだと思っています。負けから、ここまで成長させてもらった人間ですから、負けたり打たれたりする中から課題を見つけられれば。勝っている時は勢いでいけますが、自分に何が足らないのかということは、負けることでしか気づきません。

　プロの１球目は、どんな思いを込めますか？

　ここまで育ててくれた方やファンの方々への感謝の気持ちを込めたいです。１軍の公式戦で投げる時は、思い出づくりのためではなく、戦力として期待されて送り出されるわけですから、その時は、勝つために投げます。

　今年のモットーは「一日一生」
