Today I showed 2 people from foreign countries and 5 Japanese people around the inside and outside of the Saito villa located in Chuo ward, Niigata city as a volunteer tour guide in English. I announced this tour only three days prior to today. So I was a little worried that nobody was coming. However luckily enough I had 7 guests in total. Whenever I show people around any places in Japan, I always try not to speak too much because I’m very talkative. Anyway it’s my fourth or fifth time to coordinate a tour in English at the Saito villa today, and before starting the tour I reviewed what I wrote about this spot in my note book. As you can imagine, we never know what kind of questions guests would ask during a tour. In this way no matter how much I study, I always encounter difficult questions although I should study more. In the tour today, as I thought, the guests asked some difficult questions. At that time, I just saw my note book, found appropriate information, and then answer them. When I was also asked to answer questions which I didn’t know answers, I asked other experienced volunteer guides who were there answers. I always depend on them because they have been guides for a long time, and they were always kind to me. I know I still don’t have sufficient knowledge about this place. However other guides could always share their knowledge with me. Without their support, I couldn’t lead the tour actually. At the end of the tour, I asked the guest’s feedback. All of them said they enjoyed the tour. I was really happy about this fact and learned a lot from the tour and guests. Actually, one of the Japanese guests has been working as a volunteer guide at the Saito villa for a long time. He taught us a lot of beneficial information about the place. All of the guests are really nice to me and I had a fulfilling time for sure. 2015 is ending soon. Hopefully I could organize the same tour at least one more time in 2015. If not, I will surely do it again in 2016.
